Lever action scout scope
« on: September 14, 2004, 05:20:39 PM »
I am setting up a marlin .44 levergun as a scout rifle. What scopes should I consider? I've looked at the leopold and like it but would like maybe a small variable scope. Can I use a pistol scope or is the scout scope better? Thanks.

Hey Dave.....I labored over scopes for a couple of weeks before putting a Leapold 1.75 X 6 X 32mm on my 1895 45.70.  Loads of good advise here, and I guess what swayed me to the Leopold was the American flag on the box.  I used the Weaver see thru mounts, which attach to the receiver without a base, and had to add a cardboard shim on the back mount to get it high enough.  So far, with limited use, I really like the scope as it has long eye relief, a wide field of view, and is clear and bright.  With my poor aging eyes, I couldn't see the bullseye at 100 yards, and now get 1" to 1 1/4" groups at that range.  I'm well pleased, as with my vision and iron sights, about 5 inches was the best I could do.

The limbsaver recoil pad made a huge difference!  Standard Remington 405 grain I think I can shoot all day!  The PMC 350 grain HA or +P+ is also quite tolerable as well.....no bruising or tenderness at all this morning after 40 rounds.  This is a large improvement as 12 rounds was all I could go with the factory stock and pad, and I was sore for 3 or four days afterwards.  I like this pad so much, I going to add it to several other centerfires I have!

Let us know what scope you decide on.......

With the scout mount on a lever action you only have a couple of choices for scopes.

Leupold M8-2.5x28mm IER Scout

Burris 1X XER

Burris 1X-4X XER (Shotgun/Rifle)

You might still be able to find some of the Pentax extended eye relief scopes around.  They are essentially the same as the Burris and are designated as a 0x-4x.

The Leupold is probably the best scope for this application and you would not be limited by a 2.5x fixed power scope.

VictorCharlie, is your scope on a standard mount or a scout mount?

Jackfish, are you saying the leopold isn't a fixed 2.5x? I thought it was.

MO. Dave, have you considered a "dot" type sight? One like the Docter Optic, JP Enterprise, or Zeiss Z Point sights are very compact and light. With a .44 mag magnification isn't really needed IMHO. I have a dot sight on my .44 revolver and love it.

The Leupold is a fixed power scope.  What I was getting at was that a fixed power scope is not bad.

Not sure what you mean by a scout mount.  My rifle is a standard 1895 with 22" barrel, and am using the weaver see thru's that don't require a base, but go directly on top of the receiver.  Hope this helps.....

Burris 2.75

You might consider a Burris 2.75 xer don't know if they still make them. I picked up the scope from an online auction for about $110.

I have one on my redhawk - mistakenly bought it thinking it was a handgun scope - maybe on some but I don't like the eye relief for my gun.

But  I'm thinking about getting a scout mount and putting it on my Win 94.  It would be quite nice on the 94.

Where'd you get those pics?  I'd like to check that mount out.  Thanks.
