Anyone have a Ford Truck with the V10?
« on: May 13, 2004, 01:50:10 AM »
I Would like some first hand information on the Ford V10.

Gas Mileage?     Problems?        ETC?

This is what I'm looking at:

2003 Ford F250, XLT,  4X4, V10, 4 Speed auto, 4 Door Short Box.

I had an older fellow, towing a 5th Wheel tell me he was getting over 20 MPG. I'm thinking he either has the best one ever built or has a special calculator.

He has a special calculator alright. Even the diesels don't get quite that good. My dad had one in a good sized motor home and he claimed about 8-10mpg. Geez if ford could get that kind of milage with a V-10 they would put it in all their trucks to help meet the govt requirements.

I've got a 2000 F-250 Super Duty S/C 4x4 with the V-10/auto and 3.73 axle ratio. I bought it new in late '99.  No engine problems at all. Fuel economy is not that bad, considering that my truck weighs in at 6,950 lbs with just me in it and 1/2 tank of fuel. My best highway mileage was 16.5 MPG. It will give 11-13 running around town. This is actual mileage that is figured out with pencil and paper and not a guesstimate. Of course, this will vary with throttle usage.    One more thing, there's no shortage of power. The engine really handles the truck very well.  MI VHNTR

unloaded. Whats funny is on the way back my Dodge with the Cummins got 22mpg :-D  :-D

I think Im Going to hold out for a Diesel myself.

With gas prices going the way they are, I'll be farther ahead in the long run.

Here in small town WI, a local station has regular at over $2.00 a gallon today. Diesel was $1.72 a gallon.

Not going to doing much long distance camping this summer.

With 35's on the highway I can get 15 MPG checking mileage with GPS.Around town it gets 13 MPG and will RUN.Oh it's a 6-speed too.Only gripe i've got is I should've gotten the crew cab, more room for guns.No problems in 80k miles.

my buddy had a 99 4-dr drw 2wd auto, we put 2200miles on it pulling the guts out of it, 75mph w/od off and got between 7 and 9 mpg.   Get a diesel. Father in law has a dodge V 10, same mpg.

Fishing guide buddy of mine has a V10 all jacked up and stuff. Told me that he and a buddy fished a tournament in Lake Charles.  Buddy had a Chevy Diesel and he said that for both pulling 24' Bay boats that they both got about the same milage.  Remember this guy is a fishing guide.

I used to be a Chevy guy, but I just got a 2004 F250 FX4 King Ranch with the 6.0L diesel.  I get around 16-17 around town and back and forth to work.  Haven't hit the highway yet, but I'm very satisfied so far.

Also,

Gas in my area is about $1.95
Diesel is running about $1.62

I would definately recommend the diesel.

I have a 2001 V-10 5 spd that I bought new in 2001. It now has 45,000 on it, and the best milage I ever got with it was 14.7MPG it has decent power, not what my old big block chevy had, but myold truck only got 6mpg, so I guess it's an improvement. BTW my old truck was dyno'd at 435hp, so that explains the differnce. It is a good, truck, but I have mine up for sale, as I'm tired of making payments for soemthing I can't afford to drive because of the milage. It stays parked and I drive my car everywhere.

As to milage while towing, I usually get around 6-8 mpg when pulling my 24ft travel trailer.

I have a 99 Super Cab 4X4 and I get around 14 to 15. Pulling the camper or the 4 wheelr trailer, I get 11 to 12. My Suburban gets the same, almost exactly. Sure do like the power in the Ford, though.
Perception is everything. For instance, a crowded elevator smells different to a midget.

I've been eyeing a F-250 4x4 Crew cab full bed for a few years as a long term truck ambition.  Hearing what mileage the V10s get, would the V8s really be much better if at all?  I had the idea to install larger tires in order to travel at a lower engine speed with the V10 and have at least the same acceleration as the V8, hopefully getting better mileage, but that's just a theory.  Make any sense?  Of course I'd get the 6 speed manual tranny as well.  Is that 6 speed including reverse or not?

I had a 2000 model 3/4 ton 4x4 lariet I used to pull a 30 ft mt weight 12000 + 5th wheel camper, loved the truck but it was time to get a new truck so I sold it had the extended cab but didnt like it too small for a grown-up so I went to a GM and got a HD a lot more room in the back seat, overall milage on the v10 while I owned it 12 mpg the chevy is giving me 13 but in my whole life I have never bought a vehicle because of the milage claims. :D    JIM

How about a Chevy truck with a Triton V-10? My '98 S-10 extended cab gets 20-21 highway miles and as you can see below, proudly displays a Triton V-10 emblem. And, only my mechanic knows for sure!

MY buddies body shop put a 8.0L/502 cui in a 2002 S-10 ZR2. That was the first big block he put in an S10. The normal engine swap for him is the older 350cui. The new trend is the 5.3L and even a 6.0L

Over the summer I fabbed up motor mounts, crossmember and the driver's side header(actually I just modified the header) for my buddies 95 S-10 to accommodate a 454. I also did some cutting and welding on the firewall trans tunnel. The width of the engine is not the issue, it's the length, and to install any V-10 (ford or dodge) would require extensive fabrication to the firewall and/or the front clip. So yes it can be done but like BattleRifleG3 said WHY?

FWIW, Ford had Mustangs running around Detroit with V-10s stuffed into them. Rumors had the HP around the 500 + range. MI VHNTR
