.308 spitzer vs round-nose

I'd be interested to hear your opinions as what type will get the job done MORE efficiently between these two. The reason I ask is that I had a guy at the range say that from muzzle all the way out to 200yds the best bet would be the round-nose. I've shot 150gr, 165gr, Hornady Spire-Points, & 180gr Hornady Round-noses in my Rem. 700, and they all shot very well. It's got a 1 in 12 twist barrel. Thanx for your feedback & I hope you all get your deer this year. jd45.

At ranges out to 200 yards I don't think you'll ever know the difference. Go with what gives you the most confidence. 150gr bullets seem to have an edge on quicker kills and the heavier bullets seem to have an edge on better blood trails all other things being the same.

I would have to say the Soft Point, Spitzer, or Spire Point would be the better choice for MOST hunting situations.

IMHO.

jd:  there was an article in one of the gun magazines within the past year comparing the round nose and the boat tail spire point out to 300 yds.  At different times and different ranges the round nose was the more accurate but then the spire point would take a small lead.  I think this was a 308 or 30-06 test.  But, I have found the flat based round nose slug in 30-06 or 308 to have a better hunting application than the spire point.  It drives right on through, leaves more meat for the table and an adequate blood trail if you need to follow one.  HTH.  Mikey.

These days, I think it's the construction more than the shape that matters. A major part of my load development is to find specific brands and models of bullets that are proven for my particular application. Then I just use them.

I have toyed with the idea of using .308 RN bullets designed for the 30-30 in my 308 Ruger International with it's short barrel.  I feel that with the reduced velocity of the short barrel the quiker expanding bullets might be more efficient.

Any thoughts on this?
