44mag 300gr XTP in 12in Encore Question?
« on: October 14, 2004, 06:44:33 AM »
Just wanted an approximate velocity estimate on 19grains of H110 with the 300grain Hornady 300XTP in the 12inch barrel. Mine is shooting good. Also would be interested in how others sight in for trajectory when hunting using iron sights and this load. I use the 6 o'clock hold and have it sighted about 2inches high at 25yd.

I have a 10 inch 44MAG barrel and use 240 gr. XTP's. I Use 20.0 gr. of 2400. I also hold at the 6 o'clock position but I am 1 inch high at 50 yards. :D

Like a dummy, I sold my 12 inch hunter contender barrel----had a very accurate load ---300 gr xtp with 20 gr H110---velocity 1550fps---max load but accurate anyway---1/2 inch 3 shots at 100yds. Recoil was nasty. pg

I have heard this several times about the 44 MAG recoil being nasty and a lot to handle. But I have several 44MAGs and find them all pleasant to shoot, even with heavy loaded 300 gr. bullets. I also have a 44MAG barrel converted to 444Marlin and it is a bit punishing but manageable.  :?

Redhawk---nasty recoil as in sharp----not just heavy. I have three .44 mag revolvers and one .454 revolver and they are not as bad in percieved recoil as that Contender barrel was. Even my .375 JDJ Contender is not as bad-----probably the weight factor----but I wish I still had it any way!!!  pg

I agree I have three Rugers in 44 mag,one contender in 44 mag,Ruger 454 casull and 45-70 contender. The 44's seem pretty tame to me,the 454 loaded up is the worst of the bunch the  45-70 is like a big push to me.
Love the big bores.
