SMALL bore mortars/cannons
« on: October 14, 2004, 03:12:39 PM »
I went to the local welding supply shop today to get refills on oxygen and acetylene and talke to the feller about geting an oxygen tank that was 29-1/2 inches in circumfrenece.

Much to my surprize, when he found out that I was planning on making a bowling ball mortar from an 02 tank (which he is looking for) he said he had a mortar.  Made by a customer or supplier he dealt with.

IT FIRED ---  get this  ---  BB's.

He said he used fire-cracker fuse.   Had to cram the little BB in there but was lots of fun.

OK, Bowling balls or BB's?  That is the question!

If he can find it he'll call me, & I'll take some pictures.

C.W.  Now that would be a real project - trying to recover the spent BB projectiles.

Yea.  What keeps running through my mind is, "You're gonna put your eye out  with that thing!"

I think it will be cut full diameter.  Say .200 for a .177 ball.
FFFg or FFFFg?

Lets see windage is 1/40th... how about .182... going to need a ring guage 3 calibers long.

I'm making fun of this but when you think about it, for someone to build this it would be a bunch of work.  It's a lot easier to build big stuff.

Hey!  This is SERIOUS.  There's at least ONE of these things around and likely TWO.

So what's the charge?  Shouldn't there be an allowance for the .125 diameter hole for the fuse?

Duane did say he had to work at cramming the BB in there, could be a little less windage on his mortar.
