Rip the scope off your contender and replace the iron sights and then race over to the range and shoot some long range targets?

Yep.  It is fun to play with the irons, seperates the men from the boys.

Yep, it sure does.  The boys shoot a lot better 'cause they can see the sights!  The men shoot poorly then brag about how good they used to be.... :(

Long Range and Iron sights

I have done it and it is fun.  I had a 357 Maxi barrel with a Williams notched rear blade.  The sight will go up over and inch above the barrel.  I am one of the Old Men that Lone Star refers to.  I still have the rear sight.  At one time, I thought I could shoot better if the rear sight was a peeper instead of a notched wide blade.

I couldn't shoot it as well and I think that the wide blade allowed me to reduce the canting.  The peeper needs a barrel level.  I'm talking a long ways out there and I'm not even going to mention how far.

Try it, you will be amazed.

OH! The foibles of youth. There comes a time in life when one realizes that no matter how high the spirit wishes to soar the body is OLD. Old back, old nerves, and mostly old eyes. We can maybe accommodate and work around some of that but old eyes that require tri-focal and even quad-focal corrective lenses make a scope the only way we can stay in the game.
Love those .41s'

I USED to practice for hunting by shooting standing off hand as much as possible. When I WAS/AM  hunting I always use a rest, period. My thinking was ,I know I can hit it ,BUT can I KILL it? So ,I rested the gun, still do!
I would put clay pigeons on the berm at 200 and 300 yards and practice quite often.A few friends and I would bet $1 dollar on each shot, this adds a little incentive to the shooting!

That's what gave me the Contender bug...a buddy's iron sighted .223 hitting a 14" gong at 400 yards.
