Pyrodex pellets in a .50 cal T/C Renegade M/L?
« on: October 17, 2004, 02:45:39 PM »
I have been trying to get round balls and black powder to shoot in my Renegade, and it shoots extremely bad. I have tried from 50 gr. of Goex to 100gr. and everything in between and it is terrible. I have tried different patches and thicknesses and still no go. Now I shot loose Pyrodex and triple7 in the gun with sabots and it shot good. But has anyone tried the Pyrodex pellets in there sidelocks and #11 caps? I know this is not Traditional but you guy shoot these kind of muzzleloaders more than I do.  :D

That's surprising to hear...I shoot TC Hawkens, same barrels as Renegades, and patched round balls with Goex are outstanding...I use TC's .018" prelubed pillow ticking patches for tightest groups...unless you have some sort of strange manufacturing defect in your barrel, I'd think something else must be a work here...ie: sabots worked better and it may be that's because they're sealing tight for shot to shot consistency...what size ball and thickness of patch are you using?
I use Hornady .490's with 50-70grns Goex FFFg and the .018" prelubed pillow ticking patch.
For powerful 90grn Goex FFFg hunting loads, I add a prelubed oxyoke wonderwad over the powder as extra firewall/seal/lube.

But to your question, remember that TC barrels use patent breeches therefore, the pellets would stop and sit on top of the patent breech...a long way up and away from the nipple's fire channel, unlike loose powder that settles all the way down into the tapered cone of the patent breech...so I can't imagine that pellets would work well in a TC side lock percussion like a Renegade or Hawken

roundball, I am using the Hornady .490's  balls with Oxyoke .015 patches and the TC's .018" prelubed pillow ticking patches. I even tried an oxyoke wonderwad over the powder. I guess I will just have to play with the roundballs some more. :?  I will skip on the Pyrodex pellets all together.
Thanks for the reply. :D

I have both a 50 & 54 cal Renegade and they both shoot round balls very well.  My 50 cal shoots most accurately with a .495 ball & .015 pre-lubed Ox Yoke patch over 75 grains of Swiss FFg.  I have tried the .490 ball and .018 ticking patch combination that works best for Rounball and it does shoot well in my rifle but not as well as the larger ball & thinner patch.  My .54 also shoots best with a .535 ball and .015 patch.  Using the .018 ticking patch with either rifle and a .005 under bore sized ball does not shoot as well either.  This just illustrates how individual barrels can differ and why you need to try some different combinations to see what works best in your's.

Redhawk1,

My rifle shoots better with 3f than 2f.  Might give that a try also since you do better with hotter powders.

Pellets do not creat a gas seal, hence uneaven fire and damage to bullet, barrel and accuracy.

I don't understand your statement...no powder creates a gas seal...wads, patches, skirts, etc, create gas seals

What scares me is that IntrepidWizard's 45 never runs outta ammo.

Crow it is a repeater don't you know. As to gas leaking around a pellet over packed powder it is true.

Leaking past what?  The powder is creating the gas as it burns...leakage is only associated with leaking past the projectile
