CR 17
« on: September 17, 2006, 04:35:45 PM »
Does anyone know what CR 17 knife steel really is or maybe what it's comparable to, i.e. 420...s30v?  I can't seem to find the answer searching the internet.  I would assume it means Chromium 17 but that just tells me it's a stainless steel.  I've noticed some production knives being made from it which leads me to believe it might be a cheaper steel.  I'd just like to know what it is and if it's any good.  Thanks.

Seems like it's most likely a type of stainless called 17-4, a precipitation hardening steel used in what seems to be mainly hi-tech applications.  It's the only one that popped up with CR 17 in it's name when I googled.   The AISI # is AISI-630. Also listed as 1.4542(German).  Can't be 100% sure, since you never know what trickely little name the manufacturers will come up with next.  Here's a link:
