know anything about the 223/22LR conversion?
« on: October 15, 2004, 07:26:33 PM »
I just saw something that seemed a bit odd.  It's a conversion "kit" that lets you shoot 22LR from a 223 barrel.  It says you just put the 22 round into the 223 adapter and it's ready to fire.  Sounds a bit unsafe to me, but I don't know anything about it.  Surely the accuracy is going to suffer?

Would something like this be worth $25?  I was thinking I wanted a 22LR barrel, but probably wouldn't shoot it very often...too many other 22s in my safe that are a lot more fun to shoot than a single shot TC!

Any input??
The problem with troubleshooting is....sometimes it shoots back!

Look under Misc & accessories at EABCO  low on the left hand list.
They are USUALLY not very accurate as the bullet has a loong jump to the rifling. Trappers used them because they are right on top of the animal and cause minimal damage.

I've got one I picked up in the Bargain Cave at Cabelas. It shoots several inches low at 25 yards from the 223. I still need to play around with it a bit. I have a Accurizer from Paco Kelly and I want to size up some 22LR ammo to .224 and give them a try in the barrel.

I picked it up for just something to play with and I've only shot it in one of my three .223 contender barrels.

Picked up the last of the inventory of them years ago from an early maker (now deceased) and had about 200 in various configurations/calibers.    Resold all of them over the years.   Bottom line - for almost all situations they are for play, not serius shooting.   Those designed for the TC probably worked the best of the 2LR adapters, but at short ranges, and were a lot easier to use than the "rifle" models with the extra FP transfer plunger.   Even the TC version is slow to reload though.   The 22 Hornet/22-250 did pretty good to with the shorter bullet jump as I remember.

Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

I've got one I use in a carbine bbl. Shoots around 1.5 - 2" groups @ 50yd.
It does shoot much lower than 223 loads but w/  a B-Plex or Mil-Dot scope you can find the approriate aimpoint. Good enough for cans and such.
You need a clean stick or nail or some such to poke the spent cases out of the adapter.
I also use a cartridge holder on my buttstock where I can slip the loaded adapter into the back loop and thus have a reasonably quick ammo switch if I run across small game. However I missed a shot at a Ptarmigan w/ it last month so can't speak much for actual field performance.
Hurrah fer mountain doin's- :D

I use mine all the time for trapping.  I don't have a 22 pistol and my 10" .223 contender works great with the adapter.  I got mine from EABrown and even shoot 22 shorts in it.  It shoots great at the 12"-18" range...never tried it much further...
