My new Lyman mould
« on: October 19, 2004, 01:09:38 PM »
Today I recieved my new lyman 45 cal. 400 gr. mould from Gar. The mould is # 457643 and should cast a 400 gr. bullet using lyman no.2 alloy. Mine drops bullets weighing 430 grs. using wheel weights, is it normal to be off this much?

Lyman #2 would be about 10/15 grains lighter than WW alloy in that size mold. That isn't too far off the mark. See how they shoot before you get angry. WW's are are made a lot different than 30 years ago. The alloy seems to be "what ever melts".Are the diameters correct? Maybe adding some tin will give you what you want!

The diameter is .458 to .459 , although another .001 would be ok. Tomorrow i'll see how it shoots. It will be great for my malin cowboy and i really like the looks of it. I'm not mad at all about the weight .

Good mould.  Shoots well in both of my .45-70's and .458WM.

Hey Cat, I've shot 2 , 5 shot groups at 100 yds with my 45/70 rolling block this week and all were well under 2" . I really like it and can't wait to try it in my marlin.

That's good.  About all I keep track of is the memory that it took out that little rock just past the 100 yard line, therefore should do very well on woodchucks or deer.
