Big oops today
« on: October 18, 2004, 04:48:24 PM »
went the range to get ready for the deer season.Took a few rifles and some hand guns. After setting up my targets at 100 & 200 yards. I poisitioned my gun rest and sand bags making sure I could see the targets
Then I grabbed my 280 Remington rifle ,set it in the bags and proceeded to stuff 260 ammo into it?????YES, I only had 1 gun and 1 box of ammo on the bench. I guess the 6 and 8 appeared the same ,or I was thinking to much about the 260.Any way, the shot didn't feel/sound right. Then I could not find a hole in the paper.SO I DID IT AGAIN!!!! This time I caught the brass as I ejected it??? WOW, that straightened the case right out! I am glad that it was NOT a 308 round in that 280 chamber. I can not blame this on being rushed, I was alone at the time.I do not know why I never noticed the different length of the 260.Scary BTW,I never found the hole for the 2nd shot either.

You've now survived two of these. Don't make the third time the charm. Exploding guns are no fun. Time to sit down and think thru a safety regiment to assure this don't happen a third time.

You are so right,I also keep a spare set of shorts in the truck for other zany occassioins. I saw a 270 that had a 308 accidentally loaded and fired. the bolt was blown open and BENT. the firer had lots of damage to his face and hand.Safety glasses would NOT have helped.
I don't think I have to tell you about the PUCKER FACTOR when I saw that 2nd case! I usually check each round prior to loading them, looking for debris or any thing that isn't right.Just did  not follow my  own rules this time.

Something similar ocurred at the range a couple of weeks ago.
A guy down the line from me walked over. He hands me a ctg. and says"What does this say?"
I had no idea where he was going with this. Gist of story: He was shooting a .260, and had a 7mm-08 round mixed in. He only noticed it because the bolt didn't close normally.
Here's the scary part... This guy doesn't reload. He had two or three different rifles, but they were VERY different, as in .243 WSSM, .260, and '06!
This 7-08 cartridge came from a (large outdoor) store mixed in a box of .260s. Prolly the result of someone's cartridge comparison discussion. At least I HOPE the incident was an accident!!!
I did call & notify the store, so they could check the stock on hand. I'm sure someone somewhere had an unexplained flyer from a 7-08!
Just goes to show, you can NEVER let your guard down... Ever!

I worked at a hunting supply store and we had a guy wanted to know why when he went to the range his bolt wouldn't close on his round. Upon brief investagation we discovered that he was trying to force a 308 norma mag into a 308 win. So he was embarassed yet relieved. When in doubt ask i guess. Glad you came out ok

My dad and I were at the range a few years ago.He was shooting a model 70 in 270 win .He chamber a round shot and said "that kicked a little harder than I remember".I looked at the fired case it was a 7mm mauser round that was in a box of 270 ammo he had. This was not a factory thing he just got some of his ammo mixed up at home.He looks at all case heads before shooting now.He still has the 270 and it still shoots great.

Talking to a gunsmith last winter and he said a few months earlier, a guy came into his store and picked out one box of each type of 30 caliber ammo on the shelf.  He commented to the customer that he must have a good collection of rifles to use all the different ammo.  The guy told him he had just bought a rifle at a pawn shop and the salesman there had told him it would shoot any 30 caliber ammo.  I think that its the classic case of the blind leaking the blind?  Or maybe one idiot leading.... never mind,  you get the message.   Good thing it was a gunshop and not a department store and the smith was paying attention.

At the range I saw some 300 WM brass the had been shot in a 300 WBY. The worst I've done is shoot a 6mm TCU in a 6.5 TCU barrel. It hit about 10' away from the 200 yd target. Now I only get one gun out at a time.
