338 JDJ #2 VS 338-06 JDJ
« on: September 23, 2004, 07:06:53 PM »
Has anyone here had a chance to shoot these in a Encore? Did you like it, hate it? Recoil difference between the two? Brass life? I read most of the info on SSK's site and also asked there but getting info is like pulling teeth. I also have read the article in Hangun Hunter. Just would like some input. Would like to use it for hunting elk.
Thanks for any input.

Recoil is going be 15-20% more in the 06 case, pending on load. Case life ?, alot of variables there.  But might expect the 444 brass to last longer.
For myself , I would ask, what kinda preformance I needed.
First what range capabilities, would I want.  Then what bullet preference's do I have.
I haven't put them to a ballistic program, but expect the 338-06JDJ, too have a 100yd+ advantage over the 338 #2. (pending barrel length)
Now considering the bullet weight/construction is up to the task. This is my personal thought on an Elk round.I use 2000fps - 2000ft/lbs for terminal performance as a guideline. When a given cartridge, drops below that criteria, I don't shoot beyond that range.
Again, not having looked at data, ( I have a fair idea,as I have talked with JD on the rounds myself) the 338#2 is somewhat less than the 338-06. And the 338-06JDJ won't be far behind the 338win mag.

Dave,
Thanks for the reply!
I have run a few of the #'s and with a 250g @ 2100 out of the 338 #2 that puts over 2000ftlbs at 225 yards wich is enough for distance. I know many use the 1500 ftlb as a min on Elk but just wanted some different inputs. So far I just have a 708 and a 454 and both of them would probably work in the right situation but you know how that goes. I just didn't know how much extra uumph you would get by going to the 06 case in either standard, AI or JDJ.
Would still like to hear from anyone that's shot any of these.

Thanks

Ryan

I am very found of the 338/06 in its stanadard design. R we shooting short or long gun. If the ai or jdj, version is used get a winnie. Unless your wife buys u the Lapua.
