Redhawk 45Colt for Alaskan use?
« on: February 11, 2005, 02:28:40 PM »
Any thoughts on a 5.5"Redhawk 45Colt for hunting,or "last ditch" use in Alaska?Currently using a  hardcast 270gr fullwadcutter with 20.0gr H110 or 2400.
Have also loaded a 5.5" Redhawk 44Mag with hardcast 320gr SSK style
with 17.0-20.0gr 2400
Either piece is very portable.
I realize that neither is equivalent to a large caliber rifle or 12ga Brenneke slug,but....
Thanks.

Yes many people here carry such rigs.  I carry a Smith 629 in .44 with 300 grain hard casts and 20+ grains of H110.

While many will suggest that even that is light for a grizz or a browine it is what I have and can shoot accurately.

I carry a .454 casull only because they don't make anything bigger

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

That 4" 500 smith is a very impressive peice.  I shoot a 4" 629 44 mag because it is right at my higher level of recoil for something I can shoot double action, rapid fire, and still hit what I am aiming at.

Never needed it for bear and I live around them most times of the year but I pack around my Bisley .45LC it is loaded with 23.5 grains of H110 behind a Cast 335 GC right around 1200fps. It has the punch needed and the recoil is not there thanks to the grip frame - wonderful handgun. My 16 yr old has a Redhawk .45 but has his loaded with 265grners -he is waiting for hogue to make him a pair of groove less checkered wood for better control - darn guns have some recoil them Redhawks. Other son has a 629 4" loaded with 270grn GDSP and handles quite nicely . Best defense in the bush is my Guide Gun worked over by Jim West. There is something better in the .45 cal. though and it is Smiths new .460 (better/stronger than a Casull) - if you feel you have the need.
