Is there any 100yd sight in rule of thumb
« on: October 18, 2004, 06:21:11 AM »
Im a little short on time to sight in at assorted distances as I know I should and ask about a 100 yd sight in rule of thumb for that reason.

Will be shooting a Tc Encore 209x50 with 100gr Pyrodex(2- 50gr pellets) and will be using a 250 shockwave sabot.

Would like to sight in high enough to be capable of keeping impact on a deer sized target by holding high above should near back and still be able to make a clean kill at a distance of 200yds if need be.

Any generalized trajectories with this load appreciated.
Promise I will follow up properly later.
Thanks much. Plainsdrifter

I would suggest 3 inches high at 100 yards. You will be a little low at 200 yards, about 2 or 3 inches. Another thing I would do is a least shoot a couple at 200 yards just to make sure.  :D

 :D I fixed it to read 200 yards :D

Some information needed to answer your question are:   the ballistic coefficient of your bullet;   the velocity (at least aproximate);  the height of your sight above the bore.  If open sights, measure from the centerline of the bore to the top of the front sight.  If a scope, measure from the centerline of the bore to the centerline of your scope tube.

You mean a little low at 200 yards right?

Gotta be 200. I shoot 150 grains of Pyro pellets/250 SST .24 BC. I have a 200 zero, puts me just about 4" high at 100 and 16" low at 300.

With my Omega .50 shooting 110 gr. T7ffg and a 200 gr. Shockwave, I sight for 3" high @ 100 yards.  That makes the gun zeroed @ 170 yds. and around 3" low @ 200 yards.

You are correct, I meant 200 yards I guess I did not read what I wrote. Thanks for that. I would not even consider a 300 yard shot myself... :D

I have a guy I know and he does all the ballistic coefficient of his bullets and get real anal when he reloads. The problem is, I shoot better than him and I just shoot the load to see what it will do and find what shoot best in my guns. This is not to flame you so please do not take it that way. I just think some people look to deep into shooting. JMHO :)

Thanks to all for providing your input.
Makes the job easier for a new kid on the block attempting to get things together.

Will try 3" high at 100yds and definitely check to see where it wants to impact at 200yds as suggested. Plainsdrifter

Hey Redhawk, you won't find me disagreeing with you on your entire statement.  There's the real life and then there is what happens in the field.

OTOH, many guys go to the range with their unfamiliar rifle and shoot 10 to 15 shots at 100 yards and then they are off for the annual hunt.  I feel if I can provide at least a little bit of tech knowledge for those guys then maybe it will help them make a decision in the field.  A decision better based on several hundred rounds under field conditions but that often is not the case.  Our original inquirer may be an experienced field shooter with no need for tech/ballistic info, but then again the question as asked left me feeling he might be new to the game.

There's no substitute for range time and I'm the last guy to try to short circuit that need.  Matter of fact, there are people aroound my house who think my range time is way more than necessary :)

Hello Longcruise-Just a note to let you know Im definitely a new newbie to the muzzel thing and anxious to enjoy.I however am an avid multi centerfire user and range rat so your recommendation of practice, practice, practice, is well taken.
My time and rifle range are so packed at this time it really leaves me limited to experimentation and I am not up to the frustration.
I intend on extensive load work next summer however hope to establish maximum accuracy and confidence for my first outing by doing the 100 yard thing and a final 200 yard check to verify things somewhat.
My plans at present do include strong thoughts of limited myself to the 100yard shot for this season.
My thoughts being range is irreleavant but a clean kill is essential.
Muzzeloading a great sport is it not. Plainsdrifter

With your centerfire experience I'm sure you will arrive at a good sight in.  there's not much difference really.  Just a matter of scale.

Like yourself, I like to know where my shot will go at a range further than my longest intended shot.  My first elk was a *100 yard shot*.  Later it measured to exactly 131 yards :)   The sight in was adequate to 150 though so all ended well with a double lunger.
