I too ave been after a good deer bullet for my 338, I have not found one yet(either too stiff or too explosive), I think it just goes with the territory. The barnes triple shocks maybe the way to go.  But maybe the heavier slug it will go slower but still expand.

I think I have officially given up I have a Stevens 200 in 270 win  on layaway hat should work for deer.

My son loaded the new 185 gr. Barnes TSX for deer in Nevada last year and it worked great(including on a large Black Bear(494 lbs.) here in California).  Meat damage was held to a minimum.  If worried you can always go up to the 210 gr. TSX but expansion on deer size critters may be a problem.  Lawdog

In my opinion it is the velocity that does the damage. I shoot 200 and 225 grain bullets out of a 338-06. I realize very little "meat damage" bt I am not pushing the projectile as fast as you guys do. As far as expansion even at 2670 Muzzel velocity I get good expansion and the bullets just keep on truckin.

When compared to my 25-06 the 338-06 is an al together better meat gun.

Keep in mind that the lighter the bullet weight the less recoil the cartridge will impart.  Lawdog

You ever think about a brake? If the rifle hurts you that bad I'd put a brake on it. I have my brake so it comes off and is threaded on the outside of the muzzel. Had a thread cover made to use when not using my brake. I'll just have to hold the rifle into my shoulder a little tighter like before I got a brake when not using it. :D

tc309,

Actually if that .338 Win. Mag. rips you that bad try a mercury recoil reducer and tame that Tiger without ruining your hearing by installing a brake.  I got them in all my rifles from .340 Weatherby on up.  They work great and for under $80.00.  Lawdog

Since I hunted with a .338 win mag all the time here in Alaska, I used to download my 250gr loads to use when I went to visit my Dad in Tennessee.  We always went to my Gradmothers farm and hunted whitetail.  Our shots were from the barn loft, or out of the dinning room window.  There was a spring back there that the deer came to drink from.  Usually 80 to 100 yard shots from the house, and 40 to 60 yards from the barn.  I remember I used a slow burning powder, but I don't remember which one or how much.  It worked well tho.  It would make a nice hole all the way through, little expansion, little if any hydrostatic shock.  Recoil was comperable to my 30-06.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.
