Threads for bases jacked up??
« on: October 28, 2004, 10:35:34 AM »
I acquired a 700 LSS and found the rear hole for the base was messed up.  There was a base and rings on the gun (used) and when I checked the screws on the base, I found one of the screws just spun in place and would not tighten.  I tried a different screw in the same hole and it binds.  What gives??? :?

Sounds as if someone over-tightened the base screws, and they jumped threads and mashed them in the hole.  You'll have to take it to a 'smith and see if the threads can be re-cut.

What if they can't be recut?  Is the gun worthless or can it be tapped for a bigger screw?  Other than that, the gun is perfect.

There is an over size screw of some sort a gunsmith can use. I forget the precise size but is an oddball. Or you can go to 8-40 which is a more standard size. It's not a real big deal for a decent gunsmith to take care of for you.

Just get a longer screw. If the threads are good the deeper in the hole you go, get a screw that reaches those good threads. Gunshops usually have base screws on hand

You might also check to see if it's just the threads from the previous screw that's causing the problem!  You may be able to just take a small pick and remove the threads from the threaded hole!
Normally the receiver will be harder material than the screws that fit the holes, that way if they strip out, it will be the screws that go bad, and not the holes themselves!
