i am looking for the third hunting gun ive got the .44 mag and a contender i was wondering if the recoil on a raging bull is anything like shooting that big .35 rem contender how do they compare

I do not have a Raging Bull in 454 Casull, but I do have a Ruger Super Redhawk in 454 Casull. I also had a Contender barrel in 35 Rem. The 454 Casull has a little more recoil than the 35 Rem had in the Contender. Hope this helped.

well this one is right up my alley; i have first hand side by side expereince with both of them.   IF you have hard grips on that 35, it is going to kick twice as hard as the raging bull in 454.  
     i had the hard plastic grips on my contender and that was a mule.  possibly the meanest recoil from a handgun i have endured.   now folks say the same thing about the 44 mag in a contender, but i have pachmayer grips on mine and dont think they are so bad.   i never had a chance to fire the 35 with the pachmayer grips; but i suspect they make a helluva difference.   i also have a 30-30 for the contender now and some told me that it would be just like the 35 rem.  so i was a little scared.  with the pachy grips, it is a pussycat.  
    bottom line is that if you can handle the 35, you can handle the 454.  the bull is a good design and really tames the cartridge.  i just wish that taurus paid better attention to customer service.   i havent had problems, but others here have.  the r.b. dont seem to have as many issues as the other models taurus offers.   later.... :bye:

hell no!  the standard grips on the raging bull are even better at handling the heavy recoil than the pachmayers.  they may seem a bit ungainly at first; but this is one case where function trumps all other aspects of the design.  once you shoot it, you see what i am talking about.   just standing there holding it may seem uncomfortable, but touch one off and you will soon see that they work very well.     fact is i wish i could get that design of grips for other guns.  one of my favorite things about the r.b. design.

Having put a couple thousand rounds through a Freedom Arms 454 Casull, I can tell you that you can have as MUCH or as LITTLE recoil as you want, depending on how you load it.

In an FA83 I fully agree. But in an RB454 there really is no safe load that to me at least is a bad recoiling load. You can push the same bullet 400 fps faster in the RB with less recoil than the FA83 generates.

NO I DID NOT SAY IT IS SAFE TO PUSH BULLETS 400 FPS FASTER IN THE RB THAN THE FA83.

I said recoil is less with same bullet weight at 400 more fps.

The weight of the RB combined with the factory compensator system and rubber grips really tame the recoil. Even with a scope added to the FA83 and the RB unscoped recoil is much more fierce in the FA. I would prefer it to not have that silly raised hump tho. It actually hurts my hand eventually where as if it weren't there I don't think there would be a practical limit to how many time I could fire one a day. Still I've run a few hundred thru in one day a time or two. All max loads.
