308 cast bullet did its job

Well after reading the post "The reloading Gods are angry at me" I can say they must like me as I shot a 5 point buck with my Encore 308 pistol on Fri. Used a 150 grain cast round nose bullet and shot him in the neck and he dropped like a ton of bricks but was able to get up again and I had to shoot him in the neck again to put him down for keeps. Next time I will use a flat point bullet and aim for the breadbasket as was suggested to me but the round noses were all I had on hand and the pistol was sighted in for them. I was getting dark a storm was coming in and I did not want a tracking job if needed after dark in a rain storm so that is why I opted for the neck shot. Some folks do not like neck shots I have shot 3 deer with neck shots and never lost one but I suppose any shot you can lose them under the right circumstances. A couple of other hunters helped me get him out of the woods though it was only about a 40 yard drag still with my bum legs in the brush we were in it would have been a chore. I was glad for the help of these guys who did not know me but was glad to help. As usual most hunters are great guys willing to help. Shot a small doe on Thurs with my 30/30 Win 94. This was in a WI T zone hunt anterless hunt but since I have a WI disabled permit I am allowed to shoot buck or doe on my license so I filled my buck tag early.  so now it is back to the crossbow with my archery license and since I have one extra T tag left will use that with a muzzle loader for the regular gun hunting season and the muzzle loader season since I have never killed a deer yet with the muzzle loader. I do agree with that (bread basket) shot because it is a very high percentage shot. Just pretend that there is a softball in the center of the animals chest. No matter what the angle is, you aim to place your bullet through this area.

I have never killed a deer with anything other than a muzzeloader with numbers being in the high teens. It is accurate enough to hunt squirrels with but quite deadly on the deer using a 175gr .490 patched ball moving over 1,800fps w/80gr ffg.
This is a pip-squeak load in these days of inline pyrodex & sabot/240gr jacketed at over 2,000fps but I have No Bad Storys To Tell.

I will hunt deer with a handgun this year and is a first for me. Hope my luck is as good as yours and your muzzeloading experience will be as good as mine has.

JIM. Congratulations on a job well done, plenty of good eating there. A rn doesn't have near the wallop that a good FP does. I use the LEE 170 gr GCFP in my 308 and 3030. With a pistol you might want to opt for the 150 grainer. POWDERMAN.

Thanks guys! I plan on looking for a good Lee flat top bullet mould in the future. What alloys are you using for hunting loads? Is wheel weights to hard? I have some wheel weights and some pure lead and some 50/50 solder on hand. Jim

Straight wheel weights are not much harder than pure lead and quite a bit softer than #2. I don't recall the actual numbers, but I believe pure is 6, WW are around 10 and #2 is around 16. If you can get the velocity you want out of them they would be a good choice. If you heat treat them after sizing they will be able to get higher velocity also.
