I found the .223 too subseptiable to wind drift.  The least amount of wind and the bullet drifts off bad.  In fact I now don't try and shoot mine at anything over 250 yards.  I worked up several loads for mine, and am satisfied with the accuracy, but the bullet just does not reach out like I expected.  If I need to shoot something out longer than 250 yards I use my 30-06 Handi.  The 30-06 will reach out there to 600 yards real well.  I use the Speer 125 TNT, and I can shoot the head off Ptarmigen at 50 yards, then hit a fox at 500 next shot.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I disagree.  I have used the .223 extensively both in the military and as a civilian in hunting situations.  I have made clean shots out to 300 yards with my Ultra on game and had quick clean kills.

The .223 will kill prairie dogs and coyotes further than the average shooter can shoot accurately.

i shot a wood chuck at 247yds with my 223 handi rifle.you can kill them out past that if you can hit them.my rifle is zeroed for a dead on hold out to around 250yds.if you want to try 300yd shots with a 223 you must zero for that yardage.the 223 drops off past the 250yd mark

I've shot several coyotes in the 360 to 380 yd. range but it was not spectacular kills like my 220 Swift will do. Mine only shoots .55" at 100 yd. so I would say 300 yds. should be the limit. Digger
