Richard I see you finelly got the rifle out and shooting it sounds like its doing a fine job as is,  If it is the regular factory synthtic stock you might want to look into another stock a chip in town has tried a couple of them without much success didnt gain over what they did when they were stock without doing anything to them, but I dont recall him having as good a luck as you are with yours.  Keep me posted as what you do bring it by and we might make a morning of the yotes here on the farm. :D   JIM

If you'd like to try free floating the barrel it is easy and reverseable.  Use heavy card stock, 1 or 2 layers, under the action screws, front and rear.  Punch holes for the screws to go thru and trim sides fairly even.  When the rifle is assembled the effect is to float the barrel.  Shim both front and rear screws else the action will be in a twist.  good luck from the gunnut69

I have heard of  polishing tecknique before but have never tried it.  Therefor can't comment on it's effectiveness..  I will say the if you alter the crown to any degree from truly square with the bore the effect on the accurracy of the rifle will NOT improve and may deteriorate badly.  If all that's done is a light polish, almost no metal is removed and no damage is done.  I would think a round headed screw would be more concentric than something hand turned on a grinder..  When recutting a crown it is imparative that it be kept square with the bore.  If the rifle's shooting 1 inch groups now, that's not bad..  I have seen Remington rifles with tiny chips in the terminus of the lands before but didn't know the cause.  The best theory I've heard so far is that the button rifling process creates a thin work hardened layer in the bore.  The repeated stress of firing causes this layer to shatter or chip away at the rifleing terminus (crown).  A careful recrown (perhaps even a lite polishing) will help moderate or eliminate the damage and the accuracy robbing effects...

I really wasn't trying to say the trick wouldn't work, but I try to never recomend anything I've not done myself..  I guess the 'old nra' trick gives away a bit about my age..  not old really,  just very experienced...  I will give your tecknique a try, as soon as I get a chance.  VM-- Glass bedding the front action ring and a couple inches of the barrel,  cleaning the trigger pull up a bit(3 pounds is plenty light if no creep or overtravel) and polishing the crown, are places to start..  If your smith does his job right, groups should not get worse and should in fact improve.  Just remember, improvement in groups size is a relative thing and when groups get under an inch, even a 10th of an inch is guite a bit..  Also I fear, to get the best posible groups reloading will probably be mandatory...   good luck from the gunnut69

Just a little note..  the SX versions of Hornadays bullets are designed to run at velocities under 3300 FPS..  You can drive them significantly faster from the 22-250.  Accuracy WILL suffer, if indeed the bullets hold together at all...  I would vote for the Vmax or the Nosler Balistic tips..  I've had great luck with both...especially the noslers...good luck from the gunnut69

Varmit Master

If you are looking for a good place to start with a hand load for your 22-250, you might want to try Hornady 55gr V Max Moly Coat bullets with either Varget or IMR 4064 powder. I have had very good luck with these components.  For an execelent factory load Hornady Custom in the same bullet gave me sub M.O.A.

Good Luck and Good Shooting

:D VM, I have a 700 Rem.in 22-250 also.Had a smith to true the action , set the barrel back,  lap the lugs, and recrown the barrel. The trigger is at 2# and the action is bedded.Made a big difference in the way it shot.I find the 55gr.Nosler Ballist Tip in a boat tail pushed with 38grs.Hogdon 380 powder to shoot the best group. One nickle size hole for 5 shots is not uncommon.I have heart problems and can't hold the rifle really still. Hope these suggestions help.Oh,my gun is in a wooden stock also. Would like to know how you make out? I am CAL........

Hello :D ,I thimk the 1 in 14 will shoot the 50gr.bullets once you find the correct powder charge.I don't know if you can load them out far enough because they are so short.I like to get 10-15 thousands off the lands. This seems to work best for me.I will look tomorrow at my records and see if I don't have a load for a 50gr.bullet.I think I have just can't remember what it was.I am CAL.......

If you are getting 1/2" groups with factory loads with just trigger job then you need nothing more from the rifle, you need to work your ammo.  If you want match grade accuracy then use match grade components.  If you have to mess with the rifle  I would bed the action LAST.  It is alot of work that can very well hurt as much as it helps if not done correctly.  I have a 300 win mag that hung around 3/4" for along time, it actually stayed there until the gunshop ran out of the bullets I was using  and I switched, then it dropped to 1/2" months later when I tried a different powder it dropped into the .3's.   Your rifle is good, now just find the load it likes.

:D Hogdon 380 powder was so named for the 38 grs. and a 55gr. bullet which many consider legendary. This is the load I use and it works good for me in both my 22-250s.I back off the lands and groves about 10 to 15 thousands where they shoot best.Hope this helps, would like to know if you try it and how it performs.Good luck,I am CAL......
