I really wasn't trying to say the trick wouldn't work, but I try to never recomend anything I've not done myself.. I guess the 'old nra' trick gives away a bit about my age.. not old really, just very experienced... I will give your tecknique a try, as soon as I get a chance. VM-- Glass bedding the front action ring and a couple inches of the barrel, cleaning the trigger pull up a bit(3 pounds is plenty light if no creep or overtravel) and polishing the crown, are places to start.. If your smith does his job right, groups should not get worse and should in fact improve. Just remember, improvement in groups size is a relative thing and when groups get under an inch, even a 10th of an inch is guite a bit.. Also I fear, to get the best posible groups reloading will probably be mandatory... good luck from the gunnut69
