Why I havent seen no deer in the metro area I hunt.
« on: October 23, 2004, 12:48:53 PM »
I have been hunting in a metro area that is near a railyard. Well the city has given some archers a permit in the past two years to hunt specialized areas of the city to kill deer to relieve the deer problems in the city. This year the railyard was one of them. I never signed up for these hunts as I always heard too late about it and as the areas that I have hunted I used to see lots of deer. WEll so did every one else who hunted these areas so I was not the only sucessful hunters who took deer there. I also figure a lot of those deer used the railyards for feed.  Several guys I know who hunt where I hunted the last couple of years have been not seeing any deer either this year and gave up hunting there. A lot of these deer traveled back and forth to the rail yard to eat spilled grain. Well I heard this week they have taken over 130 deer from this rail yard area in the past month so I suppose that has had the impact on the area I have been hunting and seeing no deer as they have been all harvested evidently. I guess time to find a closer place to town to hunt that has not been near these special hunts. I would go where I normally hunt 30 miles away if the gas was not so high that has really put a crimp in my hunting plans this year. Jim

Sure sounds like a lot of deer in one month or less. I would not give up with where ya been hunting as yet. If you are right however then you are either going with out or will be "go where I normally hunt 30 miles away if the gas was not so high that has really put a crimp in my hunting plans this year."

Gas is high here also :( , but save a little from other places you would /might go... and go  where you normally would go...Just not as often  :)

The  small city I live in has been over run with deer so that is why the special hunts. Yea it seems like a high number but there were that many deer out there. it used to be the city had 5 or 6 areas anyone could get a permit for metro archery hunting. The still have these areas plus the special ones. Since the deer could go to adjoing areas with out getting any hunting pressure the herd still stayed high even though the success rate was good in the areas you could hunt. Now that the city has allowed special hunts and select hunters to hunt these areas it has changed the picture to a large kill where they used to have no hunting pressure. . Jim

Stick with it Jim, things change and hunting pressure might let up a little. I used to work 30 miles north of Greenbay, Wi lived in a small town called Kewanne (I would have to look up the spelling on that) I worked on the Nuclear Power site there in 1978.

Problem is I know lots of spots to hunt if I had the cash to buy the gas to get there. Finding places around town to hunt where it is close is the problem this year at least where there is some deer and it is legal to hunt there. T zone hunt starts Thurs through Sun this week. ( does only)  Archery, Guns and muzzle loaders can be used Does only. Heard on the news tonite it is supposed to rain Wed through Fri which sucks as I planned on hunting Thurs and Fri. Less folks in the woods then. Oh well have to wait and see what happens. Saved enough to hunt 2 days maybe three if my gas holds out. If it is not raining hard on Thurs may give it a try anyway but if it is raining hard will not waste the gas as it is over 30 miles one way. Jim

Easy to say if you can afford it I cannot that often though will be out in the country Thurs through Sun or at least 3 of the days if I can swing it rifle and pistol hunting for deer. I would be out there every day if I could afford to go.

Sure hope so for Rick and I and any one else who has not connected so far. I guess I am spoiled as by now I would have at least one in the freezer. Oh well even if I do not get one this year I have been so lucky the past dozen years that I could not complain. Jim
