Sierra Hollow Point Gameking bullets
« on: October 13, 2004, 10:43:10 AM »
Has anyone here used the Sierra hollow Point GAMEKING bullets? I am interested mainly in the 7mm and 308 caliber bullets. I used to use Hornady 190 Gr. BTHP bullets for steel silhouettes and found that they worked well for big game as well. Sierra states that is does not recommend the Matchking Hollow points for hunting. If you have used the HP Gamekings, how did they perform on game animals? thanks.
shot placement is everything.

I have not hunted with them yet but I will be using them this year out of my 308.  They have been a very accurate bullet for me (165gn) and when I called Sierra and talked to one of their guys he said the Gameking BTHP were a little tougher than the spitzers.

I've used them out of my 30-06 on deer and they really do a number on them.  With a proper hit in the ribs,  they don't seem to do any more damage than what you would expect from a game bullet but plenty enough to get the job done.  I've also used the spitzer boat tails and find the results to be about the same.  The hollow points will shed a bit of metal on the way through the body cavity, but if you want something dead quickly they work fine.
If I can make it go bang it can't be that hard to do.

Can't help you on 7mm & .30 cal but I've been using the 90gn .257 cal bullet with a great deal of success. They load easily, group well consistently(I suppose because of their similarity to the MatchKings) and knock down game in a pretty wicked manner. The stuff I've primarily used them for has been soft skinned game like roos but nonetheless the game got a very nasty shock.

That said, I'm not sure I'd use this particular bullet on game like pigs which have a thicker hide and really need a spitzer or softpoint for the best penetration.

For the bigger cals, however, Sierra probably has a heavier jacket on the GameKing HPBT. I'm pretty sure you can't get as good a bullet for the same price and you can certainly pay more for one that's alot worse.

I love Sierra bullets for their accuracy and have had good success with them. I use the .284 - 160 grainers in my 7 mag on deer and elk and they work wonderfully.

I use them in a 15 inch falling block pistol. they rock. very accurate and they really put hogs and whitetails down like lightning at any range. Bru

Some friends and I have been using the Sierra 165 BTHP for years, mostly in Federal Premium Factory .308 and 30-06. Great on deer, very accurate (7/8" groups out of my BAR 30 06). I have heard that on some heavier game another brand may be better for penetration. I also use Sierra in 7-30 Waters and 223 in my Contender.

I am using the Gameking in .300Win Mag to hunt wild boar. They expand far too much and often don't go through ! This means no blood trail making it difficult to track in the event the boar doesn't die on the spot. So far I have been lucky but I will switch to better bullet like bonded core or solid.
Keep in mind wild boar are extremely tough.

I loaded 165 gr. game kings for my Rem 788 in .308 and was very happy with the results.  I took an antelope, a couple of deer, and a bear with them.  I used IMR 4895 powder (near max) and new WW brass.  The recoil was rather stout out of the light rifle but grouped about one inch.
I switched to 150 gr. due to the flatter trajectory and lighter recoil.

The 300 gr. @ about 2,000 fps in 45-70 will do a whitetail in very quickly. My favorite round for that purpose.
