I just recently traded for a 44 mag. barrel and knew alot of you guys owned one on here. What type of ammo does your barrel like the best. Handloads or factory loads are more than welcome.

I think i found the ones i am gonna hunt with. Buffalo Bore just came out with some new 44mag. loads. It's called the 44 mag+P+. It is a 340 gr. LBT-LFN bullet. It generates 1478 f.p.s at the muzzle and 1649 ft. lbs. of energy. I think that would make a great hog round up to 60-70 yards. The only draw back is the price........a whopping $28.99 for a box of 20. These seem more than up to par for what i want.

Any info is greatly appreciated.

Hey Drew, your barrel's on it's way. Anyway, any jacketed bullet should shoot good in it. I had some 180 Grs for it and now I'll have to use them in my Ruger Redawk if I don't trade or sell it. For now I plan on keeping it, but you never know.

I was on NEF's web site to see if I could find the rifling twist rate, but was unsuccessful. The rate will help decide if the heavier bullets are better.

I never did, but because of how those guns are guilt, you could really hot-rod some ammo if you want to.
Ohhhh, I hate when that happens :eek:

I plan on it. I bought some of Buffalo Bore's 357 for my Ruger security six. For a 357 mag it was loud as a mother and it kicked like 44mag. My darn ears are still ringing. :grin: :)

Varminter;

I did some really hard time, trying to get what load my 44mag barrel likes. On the cast bullet side it likes a 265gr. RNFP-GC from Leadheads out of Kansas, ahead of H-110.  It also likes the 250gr. Keith plain base using 9 to 10gr. of Unique.  :grin:
As far as jacketed bullets go, man I did some reloading to find one that it likes, and the Speer 300gr.SP is the one that is a tack driver ahead of H-110. My barrel has over 1800 rnds. put through it so far, and the accuracy seems to get better and better.  :grin:
JPH45, says that the Speer 270gr. is a good bullet and he has taken some deer with that bullet.
So the heavier bullets seem to perform well in the 44mag barrel so they should be ideal hog rounds too.

Twist is 1 in 38. You can forget a bullet as heavy as 340 grains, unless you you like poking keyholes in what you shoot. 21 grains of H110 will push the Speer 270 gold Dot at 1570 fps. This will kill just fine, I brought home two deer with that load last year. 20.5 grains of H110 under Hornady's 300 XTP is good for 1525 from my Handi and will kill as well as any 44 mag load available. That sorry twist comes from the old Ruger semiauto 44 Mag. They decided to use that twist based on 240 grains bullets at 1700 fps. Interestingly, when Marlin first brought out the 444 in 1965 they used that same miserable twist. Works perfectly with bullets up to 270 grains. After that, it gets iffy. beyond 300, the bullet is simply too long to stabilize. The only 300 grain bullets I have had luck with are the 300 cast from Magnus Bullet Co. and Hornady's 300 XTP. Noslers 250 Partition bulet could be very nice indeed. If you are stuck with factory loads, any good 240 HP or soft point will serve you well.
