Bum shoulder...compound or xbow?
« on: March 03, 2003, 12:16:01 AM »
Have a bum shoulder...not real bad but sore lots of the time.  Want to get back shooting.  Question of the day, compound or xbow?  I looked at some of the new compounds and can pull back about 53# comfortably.  Will that give me enough speed?  Cam vs wheel?  Anything I should consider.  Thanks in advance for the advice.

If you can comfortably pull back a compound set at 53 pounds, that should be more than enough provided your arrows are flying true and your broadheads are shaving sharp.  As long as your arrows are flying straight, they should pass right trough the rib cage.  I only shoot 60 pounds myself and have never failed to get a complete pass through when shooting trough the heart/lung area.

If you haven't looked at compound bows in a while, you will be very surprised at the speeds even a light bow will throw the arrows.

My advice, FWIW, is to go to a reputable pro shop and explain your limitations.  They should be able to set you up nicely.

Good luck, also, now is not too soon to start.  You have a lot of time to develope good shooting muscle tone, which will be very important, considering your "bum shoulder."

I also had to shoot a compound because of a bad shoulder.  About 6 years ago I had open surgery on the left and 2 weeks ago had the right scoped.  About 3-4 months total recovery, but shooting will not hurt anymore.  Most shoulders are scoped now.  I can tell you, if they can fix the mess I had, they can fix yours.  I shoot a heavy recurve and average longbow and giving them up is not an option.

Think about getting treatment.  Good Luck!
Thanks!

smiley1954,

I have a couple of suggestions,

1.)  Go to a good archery shop and try different bows.  Tell them your problem and they will be more than happy to assist you.

2.)  Shoulder problems means getting the smoothest drawing bow you can find.  Again check out the top brands like Oneida, PSE, Mathews, etc.

My wife had surgery done to her shoulder and she can draw her Oneida set at 45 lbs. where she can't draw my daughters Bear bow set at the same poundage.  Check out different bows till you find the one that works for you.  Lawdog
