Well after a disasterous trip to eastern OK in which I went out on Friday night and turned around and left on Saturday morning which was opening day here (WASHOUT!) I finally took a 84 lb. doe with my Huntsman about 6:30 yesterday evening. She and her yearling stepped out to the corn about 6:20 or so and I waited until she gave me a quartering away shot and nailed her with a 240 gr. HornadyXTP in .50 sabot over 90 gr. 777. I had been shooting the Powerbelts 295 gr. Aerotip and thought I had them sighted in, but I shot at her with one of them on Sunday evening and missed and then shot at a small buck on Monday morning and missed again, so I made a run to Wal-Mart and picked up the Hornadys and sighted in and was on for this shot. Apparently my gun got out of whack during the trip to camp on Friday. I had planned that trip for weeks and was really excited about it, supposed to be real good hunting there and I had never been. Got there about 5 p.m. and barely got my tent set up before it started pouring down rain so I grabbed my bucket and ran in and sat down to wait it out. Well this was a borrowed tent that I had used before and had no problems with in the past but it leaked like crazy this time. Before the rain was over the floor was puddled up right where I had intended to put my air matress, probably about three gallons of water came in from about four different places and had puddles in about eight different places. So my bud and I got all that dried up and was going for the pump and matress when it started again so we ran into his camper and after about twenty minutes it let up again and I ran to my tent only to discover that we had left the front door open in our haste, wet again. By now it was about 8 p.m. and I had been up since 4 a.m. so I was getting a bit tired and spent. So we got all that dried and then the rain started again. This time we got the door closed and had gotten a tarp spread over the side where we supposed the rain was coming in from but to no avail. So after this shower I just dried as best I could and got the matress in and went to bed. I was soaked to the bone and got changed and in the bed around 9:30. Traffic stayed steady up and down the entrance road until about 3 or 4 a.m. and it rained off and on all night and when I finally did decide to try to salvage my hunt I discovered someone else hunting at the spot I had chosen. So after watching Jeeps, 4 wheel drives, cars, 4-wheelers, and every other kind of vehicle imaginable running all over the prime public hunting land I was on, I packed it up and came home.
I have been given permission by a friend to hunt on his 90 acres where there is noone else so that's where I headed Sunday morning and that's where my doe came from......what the heck was I doing 100 miles from there on public hunting land filled with people??!! Well ya know the allure of a hunting trip to somewhere you've never been I guess.
Took off work for Mon., Tue., and Wed., this week just so I could hunt the MZ opener and have a few days extra to bag one and I gotta admit I was starting to wonder if it was going to happen or not. But after a horrifying trip to the public land, two missed shots, getting rained out for Monday afternoon's hunt, and the threat of rain all day yesterday, I managed and now I have a doe hanging at the processors waiting to get packed and brought home to my freezer.....and eventually.................
Needless to say, I'm a Happy....uh....non-camper.
