Recoil pad advice
« on: October 24, 2004, 11:46:09 AM »
I posted another question on this in the Marlin lever action section but thought I would post an abbreviated question here.  I have a Marlin 1985 Cowboy that has a hard rubber butt plate.  Needless to say with a 45/70 I would like to add a butt pad.  Has anyone tried the Pachmayr prefit pad that is fit for the Guide Gun on a Cowboy buttstock?  Would I just be better off to order a non prefit pad that is as close as possible to the dimensions of my buttstock and fit that?  Thanks for any information and help!

I would advise an oversize pad, large enough to allow the top and bottom lines of the butt stock to be continued thru the pad.  If a decelerator pad is used buy a pad no larger than is needed as the metal reenforcement will be ground into if too much is removed from the pad during fitting.  A prefit may be great, then again, it may not.. The oversized pad is the way to go..

Thanks for the info.  From Greybeards advice, I chose to go with a prefit.  I ordered it from Brownells as if it does not fit they will let me return it.  Thanks again...

The models that use a sybthetic material that is not really rubber.  Called sorbothane by Pachmeyer it is a polymer.  It absorbs or disappates more energy than regular rubber.  Also it is a bit sticky so is helps rifle butts to stay put on the shoulder..with shotguns there is a treatment that will help prevent the pad catching clothing on the mount.  Sims Vibration Labs, Pachmeyer, and others are all about equal..there are some that advertise better than others but the effect is more about the material than a design.  One caution, too soft a pad can actually cause problems.  The shin of the shooter is pinched by the pad as it collapses..  It is painful in the extreme.  Only happens with the real thumpers but the sorbothane pads more need the surface treatment to help prevent it's occurance.

Limb-saver, Sims, and Kick-eze are the most shock absorbing. They are all much softer than the decelerator which is pachmayr's softest. I use the Kick-eze because I like the way they finish when ground to fit.
