H&R 30-30 can't get a factory rebarrel?
« on: October 23, 2004, 04:46:41 PM »
I'm new to this site and I really like the NEF/H&R idea.  I bought a H&R singleshot rifle in 30.30 at a gunshow with the intention of having it rebarrelled. Cant find a model number anywhere.  Got it cheap, not new but not in bad shape either.  Unfortunately according to the H&R 1871 website it can't be rebarrelled at the factory because its serial number starts with B instead of N or H.  Guess I 'll have to buy a new one in some caliber I want and keep the serial number thing in mind for the future.  Anyone rechambered one of the these rifles.  Could do something like the .307 Win or even 30.30Ackley Improved to give the old girl a little more juice and stay with a rimmed cartridge. My factory rebarrel request was going to be .308.  Found a nice Ultra Varmint in 223 wants $225 used, but then I just saw Walmart's price at $230 new.  Any help would be appreciated. :gun4:

You shouldn't have any trouble opening it up to 30-30 AI, and since it is a single shot, use them pointy bullets instead of those flatnosed bricks and you should get very close to 307 performance and still have brass you can get anywhere. A simple switch to good spirepoints can easily increase your range to 200 yards+

86chief,

I've run into the same problem on the rebarrel thing form NEF for my H&R.  NEF just does not ewant to sell barrels without fitting them anymore and they will not touch older H&R's like the Model 158 which came in 30-30.  I have a H&R Model 155 45-70 that I use for elk.  Would like to get a 30-30 barrel for it.  Do you want to sell the barrel?  Would buy a complete older H&R in 30-30 if I could get one at a good price.  Makes for a good deer rifle around here.

Not sure the action will stand up to the AI loads or not, but if so, scroll down to the "Improved" load in the above article - 180gr @ 2550fps?

GOOD LUCK!   :D

Not Sure They're Talkin' About Same Thing....

Interesting thread, but they were talkin' about current production rifles - not the older models as described above...

You might enjoy reading Paco's article on the link I posted.   He suggests, and I agree - the biggest benefit of the AI conversion is for more powder capacity so you can use enough SLOW RIFLE POWDER to push those heavier bullets better.

IF you're after high speed lightweight bullet loads, he addressed this in the article on Varmint Hunting with a 30-30...
