Does anyone make a scope (like a red dot) that is non-magnifying or like 2X max that has unlimited eye relief like a red dot, but doesn't use batteries?

Seems like this would be just the ticket for close work on big bore guns.

Handi...as far as I know the electronic ones do use batteries...why not just pick up a good 2x powered scope with long eye relief on it? They work grat in the thick stuff...and will help with low light as well...I guess if I had to use one of those type sites your inquiring on...it would probably be the Holo site...the seem to me to be better than some of the other ones out there...

well.....Yes Kinda!  There are a series of handgun scopes made today that are low-power and have long eye-relief (sometimes referred to as Scout models designed to be mounted on milsurp guns in place of the rear iron sight).  Still-in-all though, the 1X red-dot is the ONLY one I know where it has unlimited eye-relief so you can keep both eyes open and follow the target.  True, it requires a battery or batteries to function but I believe that's a small price to pay. Just my own twisted view!

Thanks, yea I knew about the pistol and scout scopes, but am kinda concerned about battery life when hunting.  Ya know Murphy, when the game is spotted the battery fails, etc.

I like the red dots a lot, but that battery thing???  Guess I'll just have to check aournd some more.

I was also worried about battery life of electrified red dots also before I got mine. I have both a Simmons and a Millett. I have left each on for between 10 to 14 days by mistake and in opposition to thier claimed 40 hours (on) battery life they are both still bright enough to hunt with!!! I am however going to buy new batteries for this season for each of them. I no longer worry about the battery dying after a few days of hunting. The Lithium batteries are cheap also, so it is easy to carry a spare duct taped to the stock or in the storearm forearm if you are concerned. A friend in Maine does that on his .22 Mag Sportster coyote gun, he has a spare battery duct taped to the synthetic stock, about 30 seconds to put a new battery in with no tools....<><.... :grin:

Another option is to try to find an old model Weaver Red Dot that uses no batteries. I have one and its nice but I now find I seem to like the battery models a bit better....

Do you think the red dot would work on the 45-70?

I really don't want to scope it, this may be a better alternative.

Some of the variable scopes go down as low as 1.25X which is next to no magnification at all.I've left my red dot on overnight and had the battery go down to dead.Personally I just wouldn't trust them in a hunting situation.
A lot of people do and like them but that's just my personal opinion.

Something to consider on the red dots, I was checking mine out the other day for the fun of it, there's quite a bit of parallax error on both of mine at close range. I used em on my turkey shotgun so it's not an issue for me....just a heads up.

Hey quickdtoo!
You know that parallax is there in every optical scope made?  True, the better ones can be preset for a particular distance (50 or 100 yds.) but none-the-less it is there.  The lower the magnification, the less the parallax error.

I just bought one of those 30 MM BSA red dots from walmart for $30 it is great ( put it on my crossbow) after 3 shots she was sighted in and nailing the yellow. iplan to get another when money allows for my 2nd rossi .22 barrel.

Duh :roll: ....that's why we have AOs! My point was there is quite a bit in both my red dots and they have no magnification, as near as I could tell, ~4"-6" @ 25yds.

Don't know what to tell ya, they both have ~same amount of error. Perhaps that's part of the reason one of our members lost a hog when shooting with a red dot. :wink:
