Tactical Type Holster
« on: October 05, 2004, 08:19:30 AM »
I want to start by thanking you all for the great information I have obtained.  Does anyone use or have seen a tactical type holster you wear around your thigh that would fit something like 6" revolver (686, 629) ect.  I think a holster like this would be ideal for slow stalking deer or with my long barrel Buckmark for squirrels.  I can't seem to find anything like this.  I thought I would ask before I go hacking and sewing my other holsters in an attempt to do this.  Thanks.

Believe it or not, I started looking for the same thing this weekend.  I need a tactical holster for my 6 inch 686 for backpacking.  The new Camelbak hunting pack I have will not allow me to have a holster on my hip.  I have see some cheap ones being sold on eBay, but not quality.  I have found some for a 4 inch barrel, but not a 6 inch.  Let me know if you turn something up.

Best,

Mark

Hey Fellas;

Try the Bandelero holster that Sportsmans Guide sells for about $89.00, I bought one for my 657, 7-1/2 incher, no scope. they also advertise one for the K and L frames in 6 inches. I will be using mine this gun season and the holster comes with cartridge loops for 10 rounds. I really like mine, and it was a reasonable price.
Good Luck!

IMHO, from past experience using tactical thigh holsters (I am on a swat team), I would not purchase a thigh holster for hunting.

In order for the holster to be effective, the leg band(s) need to be set relatively tight and they become highly annoying after walking around for a period of time. The straps tend to move up or down, pulling down on your belt or pulling you pants leg up.

If your thinking about purchasing one, go to a store that sells law enforcement gear, try one on and walk around for a while to see it works for you.

I looked for the same thing- with my Hunting vest, and rain gear etc., a side holster does not cut it, nor does a bandoleer, or cross draw.

I took an Uncle Mikes holster that fits my Raging Bull 454 with 8.5 barrell, sewed  wide black webing straps with adjustable parts, at the bottom and mid section of the holster, and then a top that straps around my belt.  I had this stuff from manufacturing back packs.

What resulted was a perfect holtster, that doesn't need to be strapped tight aroung your leg.  Comfortably secure works fine.  It's low enough so I can quik draw, sit in the truck and drive, neal, and move anyway I need to in the woods.

I can carry a rifle with this big hog leg also with this type of holster, and the weight doesn't bother me.

I bought one from the fellow that California Mark has listed.  I've wore mine in Wis. and IA during the deer season.  I carry a GP100 4'' and am very happy with it.  The holster shows great workmanship.  The fellow selling them is from AZ if I remember right.  I won bid on Ebay and I think that with shipping it was only $11.  This guy sells them on Ebay but also has a business out there.  If I remember right, he has them to fit almost anything.  But as Muskybite said, they do need adjusting from time to time.  The biggest reason I like them is I don't need to worry about my weapon being considered concealed like most hip holsters, while wearing a coat.  Also a tactical doesn't intefere with long gun carry.  I have used shoulder holsters but they can be a hassle to put on over coat plus the seem to wear on neck while carrying the bigger cannons, sri .44.  I like the hip for the sri because it carries the weight better.  My opinion is to try one,  if you can get them cheap enough then you won't feel bad if you don't like it.  Good luck.
