source for primer carriers?

I just bought a used .45 cal Huntsman this weekend, and was wondering where I can get the primer carriers and breech plug wrench.  Would Cabela's or Gander Mountain carry something like this, or will I have write to Marlin/NEF.  Mine is the older H&R version, not sure if that matters though.

if you have a 45 cal . then you should have a older model rifle that uses #11 caps not primers .   only 50 cals are made to use primers.and carriers. if it is a old mod. in 45 cal then you have 2 type of plugs, a push in type or a screw in type. if yours has 2 small hole on both sides of where the #11 cap fits you have a screw in type.gun parts used to sell the tool for those . if its a push in type then it pushes out.

actually 2 years ago they made a few 45 caliber that use the primer carriers and need the wrench. They discintinued them because the twist in the 45 was not stabilizing bullets well.

bubba, do you happen to know what the twist was in those few .45 caliber huntsmans you spoke of? I wonder if it was slower or faster than the current twist? If it was slower perhaps it would shoot patched balls or lead Ball-ets? If so it would be fun to experiment with one....<><.... :grin:

Thanks for the  info guys.  I have no idea on the age of the gun (It's stamped H&R), but I will contact Marlin with the serial number and have them send me info.  I suspect it's the older version, with the #11 cap.  Do any of you guys know how accurate the older .45's were compared to the new Huntsman?  If this does take the #11 cap, is there a replacement plug to convert to 209 primers?

Good to know.  I've heard they can be a pain in the a$$ if you ask them for information about one of the older H&R guns, made before they took over the company.

Another question for you guys.  I was taking a closer look at my Huntsman last night, decided to pull the nipple to make sure the rifle didn't have a charge in it, and to give it a good cleaning.  

My breech plug is not threaded.  It's just a sleeve that slides into the breech, and is basically held in place by the receiver face when the action is closed.  Are your Huntsman's of the same design?

Hmmm. . .I wondered about that.  If the action didn't open any farther than it did then the entire breech plug would have just slid out when I tried to remove the nipple.  I don't know enough about those to know whether or not I should be scared.  Time for me to call Marlin.

OK I SOLD MY LAST OLD MODEL A COUPLE YEARS AGO...i think they had a o ring to keep the plug tight   ithink????   theold mod. will shot ball good bullets fair sabots not at all to slow twist in bbl.   to only problem with the old models is IF  BIG IF THE GUN HANGFIRES OR COMES OPENING UPON FIRING THERE IS NOTHING TO KEEP THE PLUG FROM HITTING YOU IN THE FACE ... ive shot these before but i was very yery carefull. i think someone on this board said this happed an is why h&r went out of bussness...is there a grove in the breech plug??? or a o ring???

the twist was 1:28 same as the 50 caliber. I did not work out well. So rather than redo it, they discontinued it

Yesterday I called H&R 1871 (Marlin).  They told me it's an H&R gun, not one of theirs, so not their responsibility.  No, they won't supply parts, no, they won't tell me when it was made.  I asked them about a manual for the gun.  They said to "check with your local gunsmith, maybe he can dig one up for you.  Buy a Marlin firearm next time."

,ost 45 calibers have a 1:20 twist which works very well. they decided not to.   I get primer carriers at my local gun shop. Check around where they sell the guns.

I can rember last year seeing primers at Bass Pro also have seen them at other gun shops.  The tempter is finley dropping and muzzy opens sat.
