Highly recommended for Hunter Class Silhouette is the Anschutz - 1712 Silhouette Sporter / Leupold VX-III 6.5-20x40mm EFR Target combination.
With scope mounts and sunshade can it be made to get under the 8lb 8oz limit w/o going the way of a synthetic stock?

I have the 1712 and I use the Leupold scope mentioned but it's boosted to an 18X40 power. I have solid steel (or whatever they are made of) millet angle loc rings and I'm a number of OZ's under weight. How much??? I forgot and if some one dosen't give you a more precise answer I can get it weighed.(I made wieght in 4 state matches this year) I will tell you this, I can leave the scope caps on and weigh in with a loaded mag and still be under. I think the digital scale says the rifle with scope and mag is at 8lbs/5 ozs. I do know there are 6 of us shooting this rig at my local club with various scopes and mounts from millet to BKL riser blocks and high rings and no one has any weight issuies.

Buy the rifle and scope mount it any way you want, should be good to go. Could be wrong but I haven't heard of anyone having a problem with that scope and making weight.

Hi Cavebob,

if you're shooting here in Australia you'll be shooting under IMSSU rules which means a lighter weight than for the USA i.e. you'll need to come under 3.5kg (approx. 7lb 10oz I think).

This means you'll need a synthetic stock 1712 (if you can still get one) if you plan on using a 6.5-20EFR or else use a fair bit of stock hollowing if you get a wooden 1712.

I only just make weight using a 1712FWT synthetic using Tetra steel high mounts and a 6.5-20EFR. While a switch to alloy mounts would save some weight I still think you'd be doing some 'carpentry' with a wood stock and a 'big' scope for Australian/IMSSU rules.

I have had three different 1710D's, monte carlo rollover cheekpiece, and have used them with the 6.5 x 20 EFR and have never had a problem making the 7# *oz. weight limit. According to my note the ranged from 7# 5 oz. to 7# 7 oz. One of them was a meister grade with very highly figured wood and it was the heaviest. I did also use alloy rings with alloy risers on all three of them - if you went with steel rings and mounts you may have a problem.
