Ok, What is your Diagnosis ?

Just to keep you guys up to date, I saw this guy tonight at the Gun Club and I asked how it was going with his 660.

It is not the crown and a bore scope shows not 'cottonball' at the throat, even though an impression was not done to make sure of the throat, visually the throat is not worn.

However, he did say that within the last year or so a copper build-up was happening in the rifling, which he thought he took care of with solvents.  Which may lead to a new question....could his rifling be worn out.

He admits that over 1,000 rounds have passed through this gun since new as he uses it for deer in at least two states and it has seen a whole lot of time at the range.

I still think it may have something to do with the scope mounts and rings since the grouping got tighter after a new scope was mounted.  And his mounts and rings are old enough to vote.

How did he choose to remove the copper fouling?

The only thing I can remember that he said he used was some of the better solvents.  I can't recall the brand name.  Knowing him, I doubt he used a brass or bronze brush.

He did say he swabbed.  Swabbing to me means it was soft fabric based.

And, he took the rifle apart and swabbed after his group opened up on him, which is when he bored scoped it.

The list is getting smaller now.  The rifle is re-bedded, the crown is ok and no 'cottonball' is visible to him at the throat.  There were no impressions made though.

He cringes at the thought of getting another Remington barrel and having it made to 6.5 mag specs, as the possibilities of finding a barrel out there somewhere is darn near impossible for a 6.5 mag carbine.  This wasn't a big seller and Gunny's don't work for nothing you know.

He's particular about his guns.  And while a 2 or 2 1/2 inch group wouldn't bother some people, it bothers him because this thing cut holes before and he likes shooting between trees.  His shooting lanes can get pretty small in Maine and Pa.

This rifle was his best buddy for many years.

My guess is the scope went south and he rebedded the rifle and replaced the scope.  The rifle shot better but the bedding wasn't right, so it doesn't shoot as it should..  I suggest a proffessional rebed..

Thanks to all who shared their knowledge on this question.  I'm sure he will eventually find the problem, which probably will turn out to be something simply fixed, since the crown and throat seem to be in order.  Unless of course if the rifling is shot out.

Again, thanks for taking the time and giving quality advice.

The rifling won't be shot out if the throat is OK.  The rifling in a barrel wear out from the throat forward.  If the throats OK the rifling is also OK.

This will be the last update for this thread.

He decided to send the barreled action to the Factory Custom Shop for a correct new barrel.  They will diagnose the old barrel, replace it and ship everything back.  Although it is a little pricey, he will get a Factory Barrel that will be correct in every way including lettering, sights etc.

He has to call again regarding bluing and whether it will include the receiver.
