.22 mag (component) bullets
« on: October 28, 2004, 11:14:54 AM »
Do any of the makers of .22 mag ammunition sell the full metal jacket bullets often available from several makers in ammunition, as coponents?  I have a project with my Hornet and would like some lighter solids but do not want to pay the Barnes price.  I was thinking a couple hundred .22 mag bullets would be about perfect.  Jim

Are you talking about using .22 WMR bullets?  Lawdog

Yes, .22 WMR bullets.  Sorry, should have been more specific.  I have never pulled a 22 WMR apart, does it use a heeled bullet like the LR?  If so, I guess it would be unsuitable for reloading in the Hornet.

22 Mag uses a non-heeled bullet.

If you want low cost and low grain go for Hornady 33grn V-Max and Sierra 30grn JHP.

You would have to contact the manufacturers of 22 Magnum ammunition to find out about purchasing the bullets for Hornet reloading.

Hildy,
I had considered the V-max but I want a full metal jacket (non expanding) bullet.  The best thing I can come up with right now are hard cast bullets.

Oops,

By full metal jacket I thought you meant just a jacketed bullet and not a non-expanding bullet. My bad...

Hmmmmmm. You won't want the CCI TMJ which stands for Total Metal Jacket as the shell is thin and will still deform on impact. The Winchester 40grn FMJ is a true full metal jacket that has a thick outer shell of copper.

Thier performance on game is just a needle hole in and out, but penetration is great. Im not sure how you will be able to buy these bullets, as I am pretty sure Winchester themselves make the bullet and put it into the case for the WMR. Cantacting them non the subject would be your best bet and even if they won't sell you the bullets, they might be able to lead you into a good direction for getting a FMJ for Hornet reloading.

A 22LR wouldn't work not only due to the heeled bullet or full lead cast, but the fact that the 22LR isn't actually a .223 or .224 diameter bore. It is smaller; like .22, .219, .221, ect. Not sure exactly.
However, a 22 Mag is a true .223 diameter bore and will easily accomodate the use of a .224 with a little bullet turning, not much. A guy actually reloaded the 22 Mag with .224 Hornady V-Maxes and Nosler BT's.

Good Shootn'

Hi
We can get the HP .22 magnum projectiles here in New Zealand but I guess they come out of Olin's Geelong facility in Australia.
I have shot them in the Hornet and .223 and they go well.
Cheers

Jeff

Dear Jim,
I`m given to understand the 22WRM [rimfire] bullets are all made at a plant in Australia and are not available here in USA. Luckily I have a few friends "Down Under" who send them to me occasionally. i use them in my 22 Hornet, 218 Bee and the 22 Pokey. Really make a mess of a crow.

Aloha, Mark

Mark,

That is interesting to know.  It would seem like someone would be importing them from Australia - even in small quantities..
