The 6.5x55 and the 7x57 will both work fine thru short action rifles. Sure you can seat bullets out longer in a long action but they do work fine in short actions with an over all cartridge length of about 2.800" or so. In a way it seems a waste to use a long action for such short rounds as you might as well go to the full 2.5" case length if you're gonna use a long action.
That may be the case, GB, but I rather think it defeats the purpose of picking a 7x57 over a 7mm-08.
The advantage of a 7x57, and advantage it is, is the ability to seat the longer, heavier bullets in it as they don't intrude into the powder space like they do on a 7-08.
If you "
lever" them into the shorter mag of a short action rifle you lose the ability to do that.
I question whether the original 173gn cupro-nickel jacketted military round for the 7x57 would fit into a short action.
Correct me if I'm in error but the attractiveness of the 7x57 is it's effectiveness across a range of bullet weights.
The same applies to the Swede for that matter.
If you put them in a short action you have at least 4mm to 6mm less to play with when seating bullets.
Why bother?
At the end of the day the short action cartridges were designed to drop ammo weight and to allow easier feeding in auto rifles.
I'll grant you it also cut an inch or 2 off the length of a bolt rifle and a reasonable amount people say this means more compact mountain rifles.
But no one seemed to whinge about the performance of the 30-06, 270 or 30-30 they used before short action rifles were marketed.
I personally believe too much money is spent telling the world that short actions are the only ones worth having. :?
But, hey, that's just my opinion.
