question on .44 mag recoil?
« on: October 29, 2004, 03:39:07 PM »
I am new to the board and new to using the encore in the pistol configuration, I tried to get a .41 mag barrel for deer season here in ohio but it wont arrive in time. I am leaning toward an off the shelf .44 mag 12" barrel. I have only used my encore in the .50 cal muzzle loader rifle configuration, and my pistol shooting experience is restricted to a ruger p90 in 45acp. What kind of recoil can I expect from the 44 mag? any thoughts or input will be greatly appreciated......thanks to all in advance

Recoil is really subjective by each individual so I don't know how to respond.....also I don't know how your muzzle loader recoils .

I personally feel that the 44 magnum is about the maximum recoil that "most" people can comfortably handle....not unlike the 30/06 analogy for a rifle. My observation is the recoil is very quick, sharp but not over bearingly heavy. It's not a beginners gun..but you're not a beginner either.

With my Ruger Bisley, I use a modified cup and saucer grip. My left hand still wraps the grip..combat style with 2 fingers on the stock over my right fingers  and 2 under the grip frame...but is loose enough that my right hand leaves the left hand on ignition. My right hand grips the stock and my left hand steadies everything.  My right elbow is not locked, but extended and the 'ol girl climbs up about a foot...and I let her!

With practice it'll be a piece of cake :D

I picked up a 12" encore in .44mag this last spring and I heard allot of people say the recoil was real bad    I have shot 41mags and 357s and this .44mag in the Encore was all new to me so off to the range I went with 240gr xtp ammo and a pair of police issue fingerless gloves.Well the gloves helped and the recoil is managable and it does have allot more recoil than my old 357.I made the mistake of putting my left hand fingers over the top of my right and the trigger guard kept smacking my middle finger of my left hand  turned the thing black and blue  lesson learned!! After a box of rounds through the gun and getting the scope dialed in I was shooting 3in groups with it.Not bad for the first time out,I know it will shoot better once the guy behind the gun gets better  :-D

I have the Encore in .44 Mag and was apprehensive until I shot it about a hundred times.

With a medium load, it is a pleasure to shoot.  Another thing that made a big difference was when I installed the rubber grip and forend.  It was a real shock absorber as opposed to the wood grips/forend I started with.

Good luck to you and let us know after you have shot it.

I sent my 14" to mag-na-port, they did a 4 port job on it. It took alot of the recoil away & probably half the muzzle jump. IMHO worth evert penny.

i have a 12" 44 on a stainless encore frame.i am using the rubber grips ,shooting 240 gr xtp's with 22.5 grains of 2400.i know it's a hot load and it feels like it to.i  believe the recoil is equal to that of my .480 raging bull with stout loads except the encore seems to twist more in your hand.i am a building contractor and work with my hands everyday so i would consider myself to have rather strong, tough hands.after about 20 or so rounds the square edge of the frame will cut through the skin on my index finger causing a nice splatter of blood to form contrasting very nicely with the ss frame.if you are recoil shy i would not recommend hot loads from one, possibly a different type of grip would help or maybe its just the way my hand fits the gun.shoots great with those loads so i'll suffer with the recoil.just some food for thought, shawn

Check your Ohio regs. Last year, at least we could not use a single-shot pistol. I am going to look also.

Sorry for my haste in posting. A Muzzleloading handgun cannot be used. A Contender/Encore in .44 mag should be okay.
Good luck!

Using 180 or 200 gr bullet loads will lessen flet recoil compare to the 240 gr and up bullets also.  These lighter bullets, out of a 44 Mag work fine on on deer sized game, on broadside lung shots.
