Remington 700 Iron sights Problem
« on: October 09, 2004, 04:14:09 PM »
A friend of mine just bought a new 700 in 30-06.  He wants to shoot it with the iron sights.  We went to the range to zero him in, and that's when his problems began.  We got him on paper and zeroed in his windage, but no matter what we did, we could not zero his elevation.  I ran some ballistic tables for the ammo he was using.  We laser bore sighted it at 22 yards, which should have put us at 1.5" high at 100 yards.  Then took it to the range.  At 50 yards, he was 4-5" high.  At 100 yards he was 10-12" high.  All of this with the rear sight adjusted as far back as it would go.  We suspect that the front sight is way tooooo high.  Has anyone had this problem?  If so, how did you fix the problem?  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

You didn't mention what load your friend is using. bullet weight can and does have an effect  on where a rifle shoots, especially at 100 yards and more. If I understand correctly, the rear sight is in the LOWEST POSITION possible on this rifle and it still shoots high. A HIGHER front sight is called for, not a lower one. A good scope is probably the best answer to the problem.

I'm curious as to why your friend wants iron sights? If he does, convince him to get a scope with one of those mounts that lets you see the iron sights as well. Those can come in handy (especially if you spook a deer and it's really close or you for some reason can't see it through the scope). Oh well. Matter of opinion I suppose.  :D

Steve, was shooting, first Remington Core-Lokt 180 gr. PSP, then Winchester 180 gr. Ballistic Tip.
You may be right on raising the front sight, and not lowering it.  But I must say, if we raise that puppy we might have to put a light on it, per FAA rules.
He wants to use his iron sights, in lieu of putting a scope on it, because up here in Northern New York, his shots  are of short range.
We're gpoing to try going through Remington Service Center in Ilion, NY and see what happens.
Thanks for your replys.

htrjv,
Some thing is drastically wrong. If you are sighted in at 22 yards and its  supposed to be 1.5 high at 100 yds and it going that high you need a taller front sight. Are you sure he is using the same sight picture ? If he is some one put the wrong front sight on it, Which is not an impossibility.
I wish you guys good luck..........Joe..........

My brother and I just went through this same situation with his new Remington 7400. We were 8 - 9" high at 50 yards with the rear sight as far back as it would go. I suspected the front sight being too high as well so we went back to my house and checked the front sight that came with my 7600: same height. Comparing my Dad's 742 front sight had the same results. When you mounted my brother's gun, you found yourself looking at the barrel/base of the front ramp; you had to cock your head to the side to get your eye low enough to line up the sights. Sure a scope will fix it, but the point is it should be fine with the sights that come with it! Needless to say; his is going back to Remington if he can ever get UPS to send it (but that's another horror story; some people don't understand the difference between auto-loading and machine guns!)

I know what you mean about UPS.  Save yourself the aggrevation.  Send it back through USPS.  It's better and CHEAPER.  I had sold a .22 to a guy in Michigan. UPS originally wanted $97.00 to ship it (They require you buy "Next Day Air" service.).  I told the guy "No way was I going to pay a hundred bucks to ship the gun.  After a further exchange of words, he typed in 2-3 day service, which ended up costing me $36.00.  Later on I found out that USPS (US Postal Service) would have taken it for a whole lot less money.  We're lucky enough out here, in that the Remington factory is about an hour drive time away.
Thanks for all of your responses.  Glad to here others are having the same problem.  I am waiting to here from my buddy to see how he made out last week.  Thanks All,  Joe

Remington finally sent my brother a shipping label…for UPS. When he told Remington customer service that UPS refused to ship it the woman said “That’s baloney, we ship hundreds of 7400’s through UPS.”

If simple bore-sighting doesn't match up with the iron sites then we know there's an iron sight problem. However, IF the bore-sighting does line up with the iron sights, then the problem must be in the barrel or bad crown. All this might be settled by a good local gunsmith at a local store. If you have that option here in the Syracuse area, why not save the trip to Illion? I've got a recommendation for a gunsmith if you need...his name is Dave Klotz head of the firearms dept. at the Bass Pro Shop in Auburn, or DeSpirto Outdoor Center on Woods Road in Solvay......let me know if they can help you. Good Luck!

My buddy emailed me last night and told me that his gun is at Remington right now having a new set of sights installed.  He isn't too happy about all of this, as he wanted to have his gun for opening day of the Northern Zone.  Now he's not so sure that it will be a ready in time.

We did bore sight it inside @ 22 yards.  That should have given us a 50 yard POI of 1.5 inches high, with a zero of "0" @ 100 yards.  Unfortunately that wasn't the case, as I stated earlier.  It just doesn't seem that the gun could have been that far off.  It will be interesting to see how the gun shoots, when my buddy gets it back from Remington.

It's going to be interesting to see what Remington does with my brother's rifle as well. I don't think new sights are going to work unless they put an exceptionallt tall one on the front; the rear sight was as low as it could possibly go...

Well, my buddy called tonight to let me know he got his 700 back.  Looks like we'll be going to the range on Sunday.  He said that they put new sights on it.  I'll find out more on Sunday, and will let you know how things go with sighting in his gun.

My brother got his 7400 back from Remington yesterday. Not a bad turn-around; the paperwork showed they received it on the 19th and they shipped it back out on the 20th.

This is what the repair order had to say (basically):

Customer hunts with open sights. Complaint: Accuracy. Problem found: Accuracy.

Repairs: Replace front ramp with Model 700 front ramp. Replace synthetic stock with synthetic Model 1100 (20 gauge) stock.

The fact that they turned it around so fast makes me think they’ve had this problem before. We went to the range and I am happy to report that all is well. The changes they made fixed the problem; rifle is dead-on and grouping well.

Gun's Back - Went to the range

Well Steve got his gun back. They put on a higher front sight.  Looks like they put on a 788 front sight.  Anyway it IS higher.  Got it to print decent groups at 25 yards.  Ran out of light, but he should be okay out to 100 yards.  Now he's thinking about putting a scope on it.  The saga continues...    Joe
