winchester "Ranger" Law Enforcement .223 ammo
« on: November 03, 2004, 04:47:25 PM »
i went today to shoot my handi for the first time. using a surplus of law enforcement winchester "ranger" 55gr. psp ammo, it shot pretty good. 1- 1.25" groups. this ammo i'm shooting is the "non-fragmentation" type. i looked the specs up and it is stated as a 55gr. power point @ 3240fps.  i do not like the idea of shooting a deer with something so light, but the recoil from the .223 is about all he can handle at is size. at 40 yards he can hold all shots in a spot the size of a grapefruit. do you think this load is suitable for a a close quarters (40 yards max) lung shot on deer in the 75-100 lbs range.

Yes, it will do fine. It is a favorite youth caliber in Texas with the 55gr and up soft-points.

thelaw, I don't know of the feasibility of using "frangible" ammo in a hunting situation. I have a few rounds of the .223 frangible LE stuff mysef but have not shot any game with it. I would say use it for target and perhaps head shots on coyotes but for deer I suggest spend a few bucks and buy good soft point hunting ammo. The deer and our sport deserve it...hunting ethics demands it....<><....

Thelaw stated the ammo is ((non-fragmentation)) ammo. It should be like any other 55 PSP bullet. You should be OK as long as shot placement is good.
