"Crud Ring" Primer option?????
« on: January 09, 2005, 05:55:24 AM »
I've only recently acquired my first in-line, and have only used Pyrodex thus far, with great success. 777 works like a charm in my Cap and Balls.
Now on to the purpose of this post.
Back as a teen, (in the mid 60's) loading shotshells with a Lee hand loader, there was an option of replacing only the primer, and reusing the "Battery Cup" as I remember it being called. I have no idea what primers were being used, but is this an option for the "Crud Ring" problem?
I'll admit that replacing the primers in the battery cups will be more tedious than repriming .25 ACP cases, but it makes me wonder if it's a viable option.

Any thoughts or experiences?

Boy, that's somewhat disappointing. The post was read 100 times, and not one response. I thought it might be a viable option rather than purchasing a new breach plug and .25 cases.
Just for anybody who might be curious, I pulled a primer from it's battery cup, and it seems to be of the "Large" size, whether it be rifle or pistol. I think I will try some pistol primers, just for the hell of it.

I think the main reason for the lack of participation is people either use 209, or are using the 25ACP. The whole idea is to make it simple and workable. Also I have never heard about a "Battery Cup" .   :D

My thinking was for the guy that isn't sure that he wants to invest in a new breech plug, and a way to prep .25 cases, this might be an alternative, at least until he knows which way he wants to go.

Just a Thought.

If you can make it work it is definately a lot less expensive than the .25ACP unless you have a lathe and a little time to make your own.
I would be interested in hearing how this comes out. I already have a conversion for my Omega and had a buddy make one for my Pursuit using the purchased one as a model.
