BSA Scopes?
« on: November 02, 2004, 02:11:00 PM »
Yeah, everyone knows that leopold is the scope that we like to shoot, and sware by.  And most shooters would never consider anything else.  Now the sad part is that new leupolds are going for upwards to a grand in price.  Sometimes good used ones can be found at a bargain.  So this got me to wondering,  just how bad are the bsa's and some of the cheaper versions.   Are they repeatable with w&e adjustments.  Do they change POI when you change the power.   How about the Tasco World Class scope?   I am just interested because sometimes I am tempted to invest on one of those "low life"  cheap scopes.   Some of the stuff I read about BSA sounds like they are trying to improve their quality & image among shooters.

Surely there have been some of us who have used these scopes and I would like to know what your feedback is.   Don

Don...  if you do a search in the Rifle Silhouette forum for the word "scopes"  you will get 39 returns.  Certainly not all but some significant percentage of those speak to and discuss scope quality, reliability and what you get for your buck.

You know as well as anyone else, that our game and what we require is very demanding on a scope and, when you get into the really low level scopes, you get exactly what you pay for.   There are lots of alternative scopes which bring excellent quality and value when compared to the Leupold scopes.  With that said, if you want to spend $89.99 on a scope from Wal-Mart and hope to improve your scores, you are probably living in denial.  And we ain't talkin 'bout no river in Egypt!

Hi, Don. Our club has seen several smallbore shooters start out with BSA and have to upgrade because they just wouldn't repeat. That was my experience with the one I got several years ago to go on my HP "trainer." The repeatability was just unacceptable. It's now on my airgun which I shoot only at 10 meters so I'm getting some use out of it. I had good luck with a Tasco World Class on my first HP sporter but I do believe it has now developed tracking problems after 4000 rounds.
Fellows, am I right that Sightron is the way to go if you need good tracking at the lowest price? That is, are you finding in the field that Dan's tests are valid?

I would suggest the Bushnell Elite 4200 6x24.

I checked www.swfa.com and they run about $450.00.  Which is about $75 more than when I got mine a couple of years ago.

I second Lucho's endorsement of the Bushnell 4200 scopes. I have a 4-16X model mounted on my Sako Finnfire Hunter rifle and have zero complaints.

While I agree with the suggestions on the Elite 4200,  I think that Sightrons have a slight edge due to the fact they are lighter and have a better tracking abilities.

4200 elite...  good tracking, very nice optics, very heavy.
sightron..     excellent tracking, not very nice optics, not so heavy.

both track better than leupold for, while still a chunk of change, significantly less.

i've been using a sightron for about 3 years.  also using old T series Weavers.   heavy, not very nice optics, great tracking.  optics aren't so bad if you use low magnification.  i'm using 6x and 10x.  aren't that heavy either.  around 18oz.

How about the Weaver 24x, is anyone using the new ones, isn't the micro-trac adjustments supposed to be the best and the new scopes have these adjustments, at least thats what there ad states.  Also I've seen them advertised for $399.00 with 1/2 minute dot.

i don't know how well the new Weaver scopes track.  But i do know that they do NOT have the same Micro Trak system that their older scopes used.  consider it more market branding now than functional perfection.  with that said, there are more than a couple of excellent shooters using them.
