AndyHass & others tell me about the 200 gr Shockwaves
« on: November 04, 2004, 04:22:05 AM »
i have shot the 250SSTs with a max load out of my Knight with very good sucess.they shoot good with 3 pyro pellets(150gr) and also with 130 triple7 2 f loose.this Knight rifle i have likes the hot loads, the more you give it the better it shoots.this rifle also shoots the Barnes MZ Expanders very good too.

im going to try the 200 Shockwaves out of my rifle and i am hopeing the gun will shoot them good so i can cut down the recoil some

my question to you is this.
have you ever shot a deer with this bullet?if so how did the bullet perform?did it expand like it should and what did the exit hole look like

i have only shot the SSTs on paper.i never shot a deer with one.i dont care for XTPs on game but i have killed a number of deer with them.when i went to the Barnes bullets there was a world of differance between the exit holes compairing them with all others tried.exit holes from the Barnes Expanders were the size of a 50 cent peice or bigger compaired to exit holes from XTPs and other pistol bullets that were the size of a dime.

at max speed the 200gr shockwave should work good but i thought i would ask you about this

thanks,
jeff

Ask me how they perform on game after November 15th and I can probably tell you.  Last year I hunted with the 195gr PR DC bullet.
I think exit hole is over-rated.  Sure, Barnes expanders tear a huge amount of flesh up.  Especially the shotgun slug version.  However, the little DC bullet also dropped one deer on the spot and two others in less than a 50-yard run.  Smalller exit holes, still dead deer.  Shot placement is a much bigger factor IMHO.
If you never shoot over 100 yards, there are better choices than the Shockwave that will usually drop them quicker I think.  However at longer ranges I would go DC or Shockwave and the deer will still drop...and it will do them in closer too.

thanks Andy.i see its a new bullet for you too.i just may try the SSTs this year on game just to see how they perform.i went to the expanders when they came out.with the slower speeds that the muzz loaders give i was never happy with the pistol bullets on deer.we skin and cut up our own deer because me and my family kill a big number of deer each year.when you do that you can see how a bullet performs.the XTPs are a good solid bullet (to good).there is no or little expansion  unless you hit bone.the Shockwaves and SSTs look like XTPs with the plastic tip added.i dont know if they are or if they arnt.sure shot placement is key but a hunter needs bullet performance too

thanks
jeff

With my first muzzleloader I exclusively shot the 240gr Hornaday HTP.  I killed more than 30 deer with that bullet at ranges from 5 to 198 yards.  The only one that I ever recovered penetrated from the tailbone up through 4 vertebrae, angled down and forward and lodged on the back edge of the sternum after taking out a lung.  It had expanded somewhat, but not hugely given 3 FEET of penetration (deer dropped in its tracks).
All of the other deer were chest shots and dropped within 30-40 yards.  I never cared for more expansion as I figured it would jsut ruin more meat on the exit side.  The deer didn't seem to know the difference! :)
The SST does appear to be a poly-tipped XTP.  I've heard varying reports of their expansion, from good to not at all.  Of course the deer still went down in these reports so it seems ok to me.
If you really want expansion and shoot 100 yards and under, go with the Keith Nose HP from Precision Rifle.  I think they turn into half dollars!
I'll be sure to report back when I've bagged a couple deer with them.

Hey Guys,

My dad shoots the Shockwave over 2 777 pellets with great accuracy.  On Oct 23rd, he shot a 13" 7 pt weighing 150 lbs.  The shot was 86 yards.  He said upon impact the deer cut a flip and spewed blood like a fountain.  Died in his tracks. Very good entrace and exit wound.  Needless to say, he is sold.

I'm not sure, but I think he is shooting the 250 grain version, not the 200 grain.

Hope this helps.

I don't think the shockwaves and ssts are just polymer tipped XTPs.  According to Thompson Center the shockwaves were specifically designed for muzzleloading.  I believe that the XTPs are pistol bullets.

I have found the XTPs to perform very well on deer.  I have mostly had pass throughs with good exit wounds.  The one bullet I have recovered expanded very well.

I found that I got excellent accuracy from the 250g shockwaves at the range this year but have yet to pull the trigger on a deer.  We'll see how well they perform soon with a little luck.

the shockwaves and the sst are the same bullet we used them in africa this year! the host of our tv show shot his zebra at 275 yds and dropped it in its tracts he broke both shoulders and the round laid up on the underside of oppisite side skin! the ph was so impressed he ordered one of the guns we used and some bullets! the sst have great bullet integraity at higher velocities and longer ranges

They're clearly not EXACTLY an XTP with a tip, you are correct.  In pushing one out from a ruined load I knocked out the tip and got a view of the hollow point behind.  The copper jacket is very thin behind that point and there is a space before the lead starts.  This design looks like it might allow expansion to start easier than an XTP or HTP-type hollowpoint.
Maybe I can find out for sure, my favorite spot often offers frontal shots that make it more likely to recover a bullet.

boy i sure hope they are not just fixed over XTPs.i am looking for a good hunting bullet that costs less than $1.00 each.the barnes bullets are that and more depending on where and when you buy them.if you use pellets and $1.00 plus bullets the price per shot is right up there.this is why i went back to loose powder, the triple 7 ff.i dont care spending that for hunting but i like to shoot other than that too.

the XTPs and SSTs are great bullets on paper.its hard to find one better out of my gun.i sure hope the SSTs and shockwaves work out for hunting,i have a good feeling they will.
