Opinions on Williams Fire Sight front beads? (336C .35 Rem).
« on: October 08, 2004, 05:28:26 AM »
I have a Lyman peep sight on my 336C (.35) and love it!  I am considering putting a Williams Fire Sight on it vice the regular brass bead.
For those of you that use the Fire Sight, or have used it, what are your opinions on it?  Should I install one, and is it worth the effort?  Also, what size should I use in hight and width?  :?

I'm interested as well...see the post below this one '1895 in 45-70'.

I think the stock front bead is .290 for the 1895? It seemed to be fine with the Williams FP as far as height goes, but I'd certainly like less diameter.

I think I'm going to call Williams, as was suggested in the thread below, and get the Green Fire Sight for mine.

Diameter & base size for the 1895?

I have the Williams Fire Sight on several rifles. The bead is smaller than the brass bead and a lot easer to see in low light, and with the sun behind you there is no glare. I like the green sight because you can see it longer in low light. If you call Williams they will put the green fiber optic in at no extra charge.

Norseman,
I put one on one of my 1895 guide guns and i like it. If the light is bad you can see that little dot real good. My eyes are not as good as they was thirty years ago so i need all the help i can get. I think you would like one.

I have the Williams FireSight front on one of my Marlin 336 .35 Rems and the Williams receiver peep at the back. Nice combination. I like it quite well. The firesight front is a lot easier to see and use than the stock sight.

Was looking to put a fire sight on my 336 and was wondering if the enclosed hood would let the fire sight work or would I have to get a hood that has a hole in it. Any thoughts ?

My Marlins all have sight hoods, but are used only in transport.  When sighting in or hunting I remove them.  Light transmission is much better and needed for firesights.  Otherwise the hoods are a pain in the @$$.

What about competing brands any comments?
« Reply #7 on: October 13, 2004, 10:24:42 PM »
What about competing brands like Hivis and Truglo.  What about the fiber optic rear open sights.

Sure appreciate the comments here.  I've been concerned that the sight might be more for marketing and not very practical in real life.  Not so it appears?

I have two lever actions with the Williams Fire Sights on the front and rear.  I really like the rears because you can adjust the windage without a hammer and brass rod.  I have them on my slug barrel and I shoot my Encore ML with the fiber optics that came on it (the Encore was what got me started using them).  I shoot very good groups with them out to 50 yards and can hold my own at 100 yds. (much better groups than I ever got with the factory sights on the lever actions).  I know that lever actions are supposed to look like the old days, but they really need to offer a version with decent sights.  Adjusting windage with a hammer and brass rod should not be required in this day and age.

Norseman -

I have the Williams front bead and factory rear on both my Marlins and my buddy has that setup on his Marlin as well.  In addition we both have Marlin's "cut out" front hood.  The cut out hood allows light to hit the bead, while still protecting it.  You can order the "cut out" hood from Marlin for about $4 and they will mail it to you - total cost with shipping is around $5.

Excellent setup, in our opinions.

As far as the Williams VS the others. I think the Williams bead is smaller. I have a friend Who just put on a Marbels and that bead is huge compared to the williams. I like a smaller bead, because it doesnt cover the entire animal. The Fiber optic on the Williams is well protected on the others it seems to set up and be more exposed.

Well I put the Williams Fire Sight on.  The diameter of the bead itself is smaller than the Marlin factory brass bead.  I am impressed with the ease of target aquisition even in low light!  So I had to go to the range. You all know how it is.
I started out at the 25 yard line to get started, and using my Lyman click adjustable Peep sight (using the target aperture) it just took 3 shots.  The ammo was factory Remington 200 gr RN.  The impacts was 1 inch high.  No problem...good enough to get me on target for final adjustments at 100 yards.
  Next was at 100 yards.
Now at the range they ran out of the larger 12 inch or so bulls eye targets which normally would give me enought black to give me a good circle with the bead dead in the middle, like a scope mind you.  BUT they only had 8 inch or so round targets left.  In other words the bead covered the black exactly-"white out"!  So I went on with the shooting, lifting the bead and aperture up vertically until the target disappeared and BAM--X-Ring!  I Let the barrel cool for 5 minutes.  Bang very close to the x-ring.  Couldn't believe it.
Went to the 50 yard line and replaced the target aperture with the hunting one.  Shots were 1 inch or less vertical grouping  but never went left or right, just a perfect vertical string of one inch group maybe 1 1/2" (didn't let barrel cool). What do you think?

My Williams Firesight just came in the mail :-D

I ordered the green instead of stock red for my 1895. I already have the Willaims FP receiver sight mounted.

Can't wait to try them out together out!!

Well I went to the range again yesterday to sight in my other rifle (Ruger M-77 MKII 30-06) and my Ruger Bisley .44 AND to recheck the Marlin .35 using a bigger bullseye target.  I am happy to say the 336C shoots true and it holds a two inch group at 100 yards and I am very happy.
What really makes me VERY happy my results with my Ruger M77.  Using Winchester 165 grain Super-X ammo, I got it sighted in at 3" high at 100 yards... CLOVER LEAF, perectly centered vertically!!!  At 200 yards it drops into the bull X-ring  and the next ring  all within a two inch group!  I almost sh-----my pants.  Unbelievable.  I think the advice I heard from old timers rings true.  LET THE BARREL COOL.  I did (5 minutes in between shots).  The scope is a Luepold Vari-x II.
I would also like to mention I finally got a bottle of Hoppes #9 bench rest solvent.  The ammount of copper removed compared to the various other stuff I have been fooling with, is beyond compare.  It removed copper from my gun barrels after I cleaned with the others.  I am talking real green.  I HIGHLY recommend it!
Oh, the Bisley was clanging iron at 25 yards without hesitation.  A loud clang!  :)

So glad to read all the good news on this.  My Williams FP and Firesight should be arriving in next day or two.  Then off to the NRA range to work in the 30-30.  If I like this, may put one on the 45-70 too.

I put my my firesight on today.  I have a new 336 35 rem and ordered the .343M which is what the catalog told me I need with the 5D sight.  The base of the new bead hangs over the sides of the top of the ramp, I think I needed the narrow sight.  Anybody else had this problem?  Nothing a little grinding and blueing can't fix just a pain.
