Trap shy Beaver, ARRRRGG!!!!
« on: November 05, 2004, 05:45:40 PM »
Doing a nuicance job for a guy in town, on the lake. Trapped rats and beaver from this place for years now.
Beaver has taken residence in the bog across the bay, food pile 30 yds in front of the owners dock.
Figure young one, no sweat.
It avoids everything! Started with snares and some popal for bait, nothing.
It moved farther into the cattails and started over cutting new trees. Placed conibears with dive sticks in the channels, nothing. It moves over a few feet with a new trail and continues. Out come the foot holds, nothing. I had snares up the trail, it either moves or quits the area.
The whole time I have a popal stuck in the shore line just to see if it will steal it, nothing.
Now it took a tree, near the dock, it started weeks ago but hasn't come back to start on the branches. I changed nothing and tucked 2 snares in the weeds and brush.
I don't know what else to do, it seems to be able to smell me like a K9.
I'm going out tomorrow to remove the feed pile and make it start over.
It's coming to all night sniping job soon.
Any help would be appreciated.
BTW 15 muskrats from 150 feet of shoreline so far.
Boger, still the main guy for District 6, MN Trappers Assc.?
Thanks Guys.
Wayne

Wayne,I didnt see you mention any castor mounds---get this beaver fired up, get its territorial juices flowing. A mound and a good cator based lure,I use 330s at mine. Then if the are shy hide a couple,a castor mound is like the field of dreams----if you build it ,they will come.
I am no longer district 6 director,Mike also stepped down.

I'll make one without a trap and see what happens.
I moved farther north out of district 6 and fell out of touch with the Assc.
Thanks Tom,

Well it's been 4 days and no response on the castor mound. Home owner removed the feed pile and the beaver stole some of it back before he could get it hauled away. No activity since. Any other ideas, it doesn't respond to castor lure or popal bud oil. Seems to be focused on soft maple trees.
Thanks Wayne
