After about 250 yards bullet drop will increas a lot and the bullet energy will decrease a lot, Not a perfect answer, but I would say that 300 yards would be a very long shot in real conditions.  There are those who will tell you that you can kill them at 500 yards but they are most likely telling bar stories.   Larry

My .223 Handi will not shoot accurately beyond 200 yards.  At 250 my group starts spreading bad.  Wind also affects it adversily.  In other words don't plan on hitting anything beyond 200 yards if the wind is gusting.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

if your goal is pest control, i say if you can see it you should be able to hit it.  with a m16, i hit targets at ranges you almost couldnt believe; all with iron sights.    once i was asked by someone with more rank, what the range of my weapon was.  i responded that if i could see it, i could kill it.  to which end he said "well, between you and that m16, the red army aint got a chance. push."     :)    as time went on, he got chances to observe me shoot.   after that, he liked me a lot.

Agreed with the 250-300yd range for the .223 especially with the lighter bullets. Even the .22-250  slow's down pretty fast and at 400yds is not much more than .22WMR velocities.

i shot one today at 375+ and it could have been as much at 425yrds.  i held on his left ear(just enough wind to notice) as he sat quartering to me.  i made a soso hit the first shot and missed the second and smoked him with the 3 shot.  the bullet was a 40gr nosler, i was laying prone with a bipod and i when i was looking through my scope i had no doudt that i was going to kill him.  the 3rd shot went in his neck on the left side and exited behind the right shoulder.

some will call BS, that cool but i know what i did and i have a witness.

the big one on the right is my long range coyote. :D

Good shot!  At 425 yards that little .223 is 28 inches low (if you are zero at 200 yards) and has drifted 16 inches in a 5mph wind.   not bad for holding on his ear.  Larry
