Any Plans For A New Small Bore?
« on: April 03, 2005, 12:38:27 PM »
Getting warmer and the varmint hunting will be shortly in full swing.  Anyone got plans for purchasing/building a new small bore just for varmints?  If so what make and caliber are you pondering?  Lawdog

As a matter of fact yes. I've got a bunch of 223 cases laying around and a bunch of 224 bullets. Been thinking of this for a couple months now. It's gonna be a Savage with the new accu trigger but still not sure if I want a 22-250 or another 223. Leaning toward the 22-250 as not a lot of experience with one of my own but then got a lot of componets for the 223. Have the dies for both. But either one will have to wait till I go back to work for now.

Thinking about picking up a 26" heavy barrel in .22-250 for my Encore. Can't really justify it, with a .222 and a .243 in the safe, but....

I got one and it is a tack driver.  :D  No need to justify getting a new barrel.. Your talking to other gun nuts.  :-D

Looking at a .223 or .243 .  NEF Handi's have caught my eye but have doubt's with this ejector problem.  This leads me to buying a bolt gun,
possible Savage or Ruger.  Have been a Remington fan all my life , but I suspect thay might be sleeping with Wal-Mart.  Have not ruled out a Winchester Compact in .243  Anyone ever have a Model 70 Compact??

I do plan on buying a NEW rifle.

Well I have to now.

I've bought:

1000 Ferderal Brass
2 brands of bullets both 55gr.
picked up a few pounds of powder H335
Dillon 550 Convertion
Dies
Rings
Scope

Just need the rifle.

Plan on getting Ultra Varmint Rifle 223 Rem. 24 " Bull Barrel by H&R.

Figured I need another Pdog rifle.
Nothing worse than sitting on a Pdog town rifle hot and Pdogs  :D at 100yard.
Just can't let it happen.

That .19 Calhoon is looking more and more interesting. I've got a brand-new A-Bolt II Micro in .22 Hornet in the gun safe, and since I have two other Hornets, I might as well do something with it besides let it sit neglected in the dark.

I'm thinking of going with a 24" stainless barrel with the same profile as the factory 22" (thin and light).

Hopefully, I'll end up with a great walking-around varmint rifle suitable for everything from crows to coyotes within 350 yards.

I have been kicking the idea of putting together a custom for groundhogs and bench shooting.

Lilja SS slow twist

Trued 700 Action

Timney
 trigger assembly

Boyds thumbhole

Chamber it for 243 Ackley Improved throwing 65g VMax's out near 4000fps.

It's either that or maybe a Savage in 204. I still want a 243AI to go along with my 25-06. 8)

I have been looking hard at .20 cal rifles now for about 6 months.  I probably
have another 6 months of non-shooting distractions to get out of the way, and
then I am going to get even more serious about this .20 Tac. idea.  It will probably
be built on a Savage Striker action, put into a SSS rifle stock.  I need to do a
bolt face change, along with getting the .20 Tac barrel.  Or if I can find a deal
on a well worn Savage short action rifle, at a pawn shop, or some other source,
then I might keep the Striker a pistol, and just work with a regular Savage SA.
This will probably be a winter project.  I have 2 AR-15s, one Savage 16 .22-250,
and one Tikka T-3 .223, to keep the varmints in check until I can bring this new
.20 Tac. into the battery.  I sure do love new rifle research, along with the plotting
and planning.  It is almost as much fun as shooting the new rifle...On second
thought, it is way more fun to shoot them :)

Warf73 mentioned picking up 1,000 Federal cases.  Just curious where your source for Federal brass was.  For rifle brass, all I ever see in the catalogs is Remington, Winchester, and some Hornady, Norma & Lapua in limited calibers.

With respect to the original topic, I'd love to get my hands on a new Savage Model 12 low profile in .204 Ruger.  But since I bought a .308 Rem 700 a couple months ago, I'll probably hold off on any new rifles till next year (married, you see).  Taking the .22-250 out to SW Kansas in a few weeks for p-dogs.  Will be my first trip.

Come on Warf, give those dogs a chance, step it back 3-400 yards.
You can kill em with a 22 long with open sights at 100 yards!

A CZ-452 Varmit in .17HMR.

Picked up a CZ452 Lux in .22LR a few months back.  For the money, nothing better.  Sold me on CZ's.

Had a 22-250AI and 6mmremAI done up towards the end of last year and just started using the 6mmremAI.  I'm thinking about a 22cal on the Sako 220 russian case about a 1/15 twist for those lighter bullets other one would be a 20 tactial.

I am getting a CZ 527 varmint/kevlar in .223 and a Bushnell Elite 10x40 mildot scope. I have ordered Warne rings and a Lee deluxe die set with the collet neck sizer. My son on the other hand is working off a Savage 12FV in .223 and a Bushnell Legend 5x15 mildot scope. We just need to find a load that shoots well in both rifles to keep things simple and wreak havoc on the whistlepig population here in Idaho.

Anything is possible, after all this is a perfect world isn't it? I've done it before with a contender in .222 rem and a cz 527 american in the same caliber. A 50gr hornady V-max with a slightly less than maximum load of varget. The contender was a super 14 pistol. Varget is my favorite powder for everything I load, .222 to 45-70.

I just bought a CZ 527 in 221 fireball. Awesome set trigger, great accuracy .5 in with the better loads. VERY NEET piece of walnut. Gives velocities just shy of my 223's with about 45% of the powder. My favorite load runs 3440 fps, 15.0 gr LilGun with 40 gr VMAX. Shot 3 into .3 at 100. Have shot upto 16.5 gr of LilGun, 3650 fps.

Cool caliber, makes a great walking varmiter.

Its not a new rifle, its a Ruger .257 Roberts that was made in 1989 and came into my possession a little over a year ago, still in pristine condition.  Nor is it strictly for varmints, as  fully intend to use it on big game.  I can't even say its a new scope, as I bought it used this last weekend, but it is a happy, new combination!

The "problem" was the Leupold M8 4x scope ithe rifle came with just didn't have the magnification I wanted for p-dogs or even coyotes at extended ranges.  The M8 4x worked well for clay pigeons at 200 yards and it was possible to hit them at 300, but I wasn't happy with the setup.  I decided to replace the M8 and move it to a used Marlin .30-30 I ahd picked up a few weeks ago.

This last weekend I found the repacement- a used Leupold Vari-X III 4.5-12.  The scope looked like it had never been mounted - no scatches of marks on the tube where the rings would have been.  Don't know if I got a good price or not at $350 but I was happy with the deal as I hadn't been able to find any other used Leupolds and the 4.5-14x seemed perfect for a dual-purpose varmint/big game rifle.

Now I just need to get to the range to sight the rifles in.  Sweet anticipation!

My "new" rifle is also not new at all.........it's a '60's era Rem 788 .22-250.
My Dad wanted me to have it when he was gone........sure wish he could
have possessed it for another 10 years.

It has taken several hundred p-dogs and dozens of deer (SOME of us have
enough sense not to attempt deer shots at less than 100yds --- bullets
fragment too soon). I shot it quite a bit as a teenager, but it was Dad's
pride & joy. The only change will be replacing the 4x Bushnell scope with
a 30 year old Weaver 10X, which was on my first .25-06. Both are in
pristine condition.
We need to change our politicians
like we do dirty diapers.............
for the same reason.
