45-70 range

What is the effective range of a 45-70 in a 14" barrel?  100 yards?  150?

How does this compare to the 375 jdj in effective range?

Effective range is greatly determined by ones shooting ability.

What amunition will you be using?  What sights, iron or scope?  What is your skill level?

A 300-grain bullet launched at 1600 fps will kill a deer well past 150 yards - done it, the Hornady bullet penetrated from stem to stern, expanded to 150% diameter, and lodged under the hide at the rump.  But bullet drop will be a determining factor too.  Sighted in at 100 yards means the bullet hits 24" low at 200 - you'll miss the shot, trust me.  Sighted in 1.5" high at 100 yards the bullet still drops 19" at 200 yards.  Sight in 1.5" high at 100, you'll never know the difference between that and dead on at 100 yards in the field, and the bullet will land a bit higher at longer range.  I'd not shoot past 125 yards any more - too easy to misjudge and actually be shooting at 150+.  That would probably mean a miss or a low, leg-breaking non-fatal shot.  All thia assumes you can keep all your shots in a 6" circle at you shooting range in the field.

Im by far no expert.  But when someone asks me this type of question I revert to the standard I was told (cant remember by who.)  Your personal distance should be the range at which you can CONSISTANTLY put all your shots in a 6" circle (meaning three inches up and three inches down from the bull.)  Usually this means most people wont shoot out past the cartridges usefull range, but sometimes there is an exception.  This, I dont think, will be one of them.  The .45/70, even from a pistol, still packs one heck of a whollop.

I call mine "the 150 yard sledgehammer".  That's because from right off the end of the muzzle to 150yd. all I have to do is put the lower chest at the cross of the hairs and it's all over for the deer.
