20 ga for deer
« on: November 27, 2004, 04:00:59 AM »
i'm looking for info or idea's concerning getting a 20 ga slug gun for my son or me ( i'm not getting any younger ). I'm thinking about the win 1300 or mossberg 500 with rifled barrel. How's the accuracy and ballistic's out to 100 rads? Any help would be appreciated. thanks.

I picked up a Mossburg 500 Youth a year ago for my 14 year old Grandson and didn't get the rifled barrel. His has the smooth-bore w/3-chokes and I picked up a x-full Hastings turkey choke. He primarily was looking for a turkey gun and I put on some firesights.  I haven't had enough time to zero it in so far with foster slugs, but sure is a dandy pump with the receiver safety on top and wouldn't mind one myself in 20 gauge!  It will do a fine job and it has a time-honored design.

Personally, I wouldn't bother getting a rifled barrel since shotgun only hunting areas generally are not appropriate for hunters shooting over 75 yds. when there are houses and barns and people/domestic animals in the way.

20 ga. is plenty good enough for deer.  I bought a Pardner 20 youth model for my grandson a few years ago.  That pardner has taken 5 deer with 5 shots using winchester foster slugs and bead sight only. It works just fine out to about 70 yds or so. I say 70 because that has been the longest shot at a deer so far. It will group well enough to shoot farther but I'm not sure about energy .

I've found the 20 gauge to be more than satisfactory for deer, as evidenced by this year's hunt.

I shot this button buck at around 60 yards using the Remington Copper Saboted round, and it never took another step.

Even the Mossberg in smoothbore with foster slugs will do OK to about 75 yards, but 100+ yards is scope, rifled barrel, and sabot slug territory.

Lady I work with popped an 8 point buck this year with her Mossburg 500 Youth 20 ga. with a rifled barrel.  She used the Barnes Expander Sabot.  She said the buck dropped at the shot.  Probably around 30-40 yds.

I would use a 20 gauge. With the right barrel and ammo their pretty effective. Check these two out!
