I'm just about stone deaf. so porting has no cosequence for me, save cutting down on the recoil.....I think

My Broo-In-Law has a BAR with the Boss on it and he said in hunting that it liked to make him cry when he shot it.  He pulled it and replaced it with the non ported version.  I don't know as one needs a recoil reducer in a 30-06 gas job anyway.

Had a full blown brake put on the 458 Coug I built up from a standard Marlin 45-70.  That I can tell, there ain't a hoot of difference in the recoil, it's just as brutal.  Maybeso I'm gettin soft, but I just can't take the poundin no more :?

There still must be a pile of gunners that WANT a Guide gun but haven't had the means to get one.  Maybe you could swap yours out for a regular 1895?  Even if you ended up having the barrel cut back and crowned, it would be the cheaper way out, less the straight grip stock, which I personaly don't like.

I have 2 rifles that are ported, 1 in the 450 marlin and a 06. I carry a set of the small ear plugs that are on a plastic loop around my neck and put them on when I shoot while hunting. Not to good for the fast shots. I don't hunt with either much. Use other rifles.

I've somewhat solved this problem, or made it more tolerable, anyway.  If you handload, try using IMR 3031 down around 1150 fps or so.  It doesn't really kick, and it's less loud than full blown loads.  The load I use is at the bottom end for the Trap Door models.

A 405 grain cast bullet launched at 1150 fps will kill them dead out to 100 yards easily (and it's pleasant to practice with.)

I do carry ear plugs with me when I hunt (the kind you can find at an industrial safety store.)  They have a piece that goes over your head, like ear muffs.  If only I could remember to put them in before I shoot!

I posted a similar comment last month.  I have always used a Remington model 700, 270 but just love the look, feel and quickness of the Winchester 94.  The 30/30 is weak compared to the 270.  When I saw the ballistics on the 444, I was very excited and immediately bought one.  I was not prepared for the noise.  Of course on the range hearing protection is a no brainer but in the field, I would never consider sticking plugs in my ears before shooting.  What is the point?  This is a brush gun carried for the one half second advantage to other deer rifles.  

Due to my age and work my hearing is anything but sensitive.  It felt like this gun did permanent damage to my ears.  My left ear hurt as if I was clapped with a flat palm.  My ears rang for three days.  I got off a shot in the open, where the noise should have been less than if I were standing against al rock or wall or something.

I would like to hear other comments and suggestions.  I am afraid that most of my shooting has been in the field.  If spent time at the range I might not have been so surprised.  I have shot a large array of guns over the years.  Some are boomers but this is something else.  This is not loud; this is exposure to the concussion of the muzzle blast or something.  

Any explanations!

Since i posted on Dec. 7  I traded my 450 ported GG for the new 450MR. Like it a lot better. Recoil was heavy but  not a killer.  Stock is pistol grip and seem to transfer recoil better.
Got the dealer to take the GG and $100. difference. That was the diference in cost. ( I was told )

its kind of a expensive solution but I bought two walker game ears and since I mostly handgun hunt I got in the habbit of wearing them all the time when I hunt.

Just a thought:  Weld shut the port holes.

How much would a Smith charge for this, and are they usually set up for it? Seems like a good option if you have the GG you want except for the ports.
