405 sp factory 45-70

Anyone have experience with the factory loaded Remington 405 grain sp in .45-70.  This will be exiting a 23" barrel from a Contender.  In particular, I am looking for experience with shooting bison and whitetail.  Just curious of what to expect for bullet performance.  Thanks all. :D

I have only used it on Whitetails.  Expect complete penetration under any circumstance.  Meat damage is minimal and deer go down pretty quick.

Just got back from Native Prairie Bison ranch in Bowdon, ND.  Shot a 1 1/2 year old bull with the factory Remington 405 grain jsp.  Complete pass through on rib cage shot at about 70 yards.  Bull piled up after about an 80 yard run.  Did the trick.  Who says you gotta have jacked up loads?

I load the 405 Remington to around 1500 fps to get at 200 yards what the factory load gives at 100 yards. I use IMR 4227, and get great accuracy and a pretty clean bore.

Although I wish I was able to load hotter, I am limited by the T/C Contender's maximum pressure of about 28,000 cup.  Further, I think the factory load seems to be sufficient.  I like the light weight and compactness of the Contender, so I am willing to compromise.
Rickt300, what have you shot with that load and how did it perform?

I have used the bullet in both the factory load, as well as hand loads.  I've used the the factory load from my 28" Browning HiWall, on numerous whitetails in the midwest.  On every whitetail there was complete penetration, entry and exit wounds were roughly the size of a quarter to half dollar and rarely did they run more than 50 yards, if at all.  Factory loads quote around 1300 fps.  Handloading the same bullet with IMR 3031 I get roughly 1700 fps.  Same penetration, same performance, I wanted the extra velocity for 250 yard shots on elk.

Factory loads on bison should be no problem, keeping in mind your distances you should be fine.  Afterall, before the newest super stout short blamo wamo mags, was the Springfield Trapdoors, and you can be assured that they launched a 405 grain bullet at 1300 fps, or less, and contributed to the death of many heads of game.  Practice is key.  If you can hit what you are aiming at, the bullet will do fine.

Insanelupus, thanks for the thoughts.  I tend to agree with you and others who realize that the "trap door" loads have killed many animals in the past and will take more in the future.  I have seen and heard of so many folks using high pressure loads for close range whitetails, but it just makes no sense to me.  Complete penetration is complete penetration.  Thanks again...

I've taken White tail with both Factory 405 Rem. ,Handloaded 405 Rem. pushed to around 1800fps. Other than the kick on my end ,I couldn't tell any difference on the game. Big Holes going in and bigger going out. That bullet is a performer, plain and simple ,I wouldn't care to use it against any thing on this Island.

Echo the sentiments of the others. 1500 fps with this bullet gets complete penetration on hogs and deer from any agle so far. In my 1895 recoil is not bad and muzzle flash is low. This load would be a handful in a contender pistol I bet.
