Free Floating ML barrels???
« on: November 11, 2004, 08:48:05 AM »
Just curious if anyone has tried free floating their Encore ML barrel using the "o-ring" or "washer" trick.  I'm thinking about trying it and wondering what if any results people have had

Vapour has, don't know if he'll be checking the board few a few days though as he's too busy drooling over his gun in preparation for the season opener on Monday.
He tried it, but in HIS case it didn't do much.  The gun shot sub-MOA both before and after floating....but not over 80-85 grains with ANY bullet.  I have heard that some people got good accuracy gains though.

You might get a few more responses to this in the Encore rifle forum, that's where I got most of my data for floating the forearm.

As Andy said it would shoot sub-MOA with a couple loads before and after floating, but I think I brought it from around 0.9 MOA to 0.6 MOA (those being the best groups on any particular day, averages are about 0.3-0.4 inches higher).

I first tried using nylon washers to get the forearm a bit further away from barrel.  I had to dremel out the centers of the washers to fit them over the screws.  This made assembly and disassembly more annoying.  I eventually sanded--CAREFULLY!--the barrel channel so that I didn't need to use the washers anymore.  I used linseed oil as a protectant after sanding.  Now the only points of contact between my barrel and forearm/receiver are the two screw posts.  All in all pretty easy and may have given me an accuracy improvement--but I still can't get anything to shoot over 1900 FPS without shooting 4 inch groups.  It's still a 200 yard gun, just not quite as flat as I'd like it.
