Buckslayer,

I have the 20 gauge rifled barrel for my Encore.  I tried six different types of slugs.  The two that shot best in my barrel were the Winchester Supreme Partition (260 grain at 1900 fps) and the Remington 1 oz. Buckhammer.  At 50 yards, the Winchesters  group 1 1/2 inches (three shots).  The Remington Buckhammer load shot tight 1 inch groups.  The Buckhammer recoils more, but also cuts a bigger hole in the target.  If I were hunting tighter cover (shots less than 100 yards), I'd use the Buckhammer.  For shots over 100, the Winchester can reach out there.  You just have to invest some $ to find out what shoots best for you.  The gun is sighted two inches high at 50 yards.  My Encore has had a trigger job and oversized hinge pin.  I have a 3 X 9 Nikon scope mounted on the gun.  I also use a Shooter's Ridge rest with two 25 pound bags of shot resting on a plate that I mounted on the rest.  This set up generates about zero recoil, and makes shooting slug loads actually fun.  Wish I had bought this set up years ago.  Hope this helps.

Using the WIN SUPREMES AT A 100 yd indoor range, I put 5 shots through the same hole. I have not  been able to do that outside if there is a cross-wind, but no group bigger than 1.5 inches. This is with a 4x Leupold with the gun sandbagged, and equipped with the limbsaver recoil pad. (the best money you'll ever spend)

Good question?  Should I go with a 12 or 20 ga. barrel?  I also have been thinkng of getting a slug barrel or gun.  The NEF is a great gun for the price.  I have a ML and .223 varmit gun and love them both.  They are both takc drivers and for the price you can't beat them.

But is the rifled slug barrel a better deal then the NEF shotgun?
Just another voice in the crowd!!!

I had a NEF 45-70 and it was the most painful gun I ever shot. The trigger and lock time is inferior to the Encore, but the whole gun is cheaper than a Encore barrel if you buy it right. Remeber you will have to buy a new forearm for the Encore slug barrel also.

Im a dyed in the wool 12 ga man, but will admit that, as far as deer and slugs go, the 20 will do just as well as the 12 with less punishment to you the shooter.

My main deer blaster is a Browning a-bolt slug gun. My brother bought the 20 ga encore barrel and was called to active duty in Iraq, so I bought it from him. While he was gone I found another A-bolt and he bought that. My son uses the encore.
